997 Gen2 4S with outward dent in rear wheel arch...

Hi,

I noticed on my car today that i had what looked like a stone dent that had come from within the rear wheel arch and pushed outwards the body of the car. Tt was raised to a point about 3mm at the tip and created around a 10mm circle. It looked like a stick had been pushed up from behind the wheel arch. I took it into the dealership for them to have a look and nobody could explain what could have happened. There is a cover in the wheel arch that showed no damage and was complete. After scratching our heads and not been able to come up with an answer it was sent to the dent removel man who removed most of the dent but left a small pin prick type mark and bruised paintwork. He asked that porsche could remove the arch cover as he thought the object might be still behind it.

Back to porsche and they removed the cover and found nothing under it, and only a whelt on the inside of the wheel arch where the skin had been pushed back in by the dent removel man. He suggests that a foreign body has got inbetween the two skins of the arch and will need to remove it so have booked it back in for further work.

Has anyone every seen this before? I nor anyone I have asked can see how it could have happened.

Wow! I will have to check mine more closely in the morning! Thanks for sharing - how weird. It looks like a rivet that was dropped and not recovered during production. Whoever was working on that station seems to have made a habit of it! I wonder if you have any claim under warranty? I think the suggestion to drill a relatively large hole from the underneath to recover the rivet and then plug with a rubber bung sounds good?

I was thinking it may be a weak rivert that has dropped into the v of the two skins? The car is an 09 plate so its had 7 years to work free. I did take out two years porsche warranty last october. I must admit, the dealer has been very good so far so maybe warranty will be mentioned tomorrow. I sent them the link so they are aware of it and will give them a call to see what they say.

Isn't there an issue with creaking and rear side window and something about a rivet. Could it be the curd for this involves drilling out the rivet and whag is left drops down into this cavity.

I'm reminded of a story, probabaly untrue. In the 60's there was a disgruntled Rolls Royce employee who used tie a screw to a small thread and hang it behind the dash, result an intermittent hard to detect noise.

It is indeed a rivet, and its a more common problem than we might suspect. The rennlist thread above rather proves this I think.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an expert workshop or dent removal guy who has EXPERIENCE of dealing with these?

I'm thinking that if the trim is removed from the inside of the car, in the rear wheelarch zone, that there may be access available? Not perfect but better than through the wheel well itself.
