Hi chaps

So I've been looking around at servicing the Tuscan. Between £600-£1000 is what ive been quoted so far, which I've thought it fairly ludecrous considering the basic nature of the car.
I've also seen that Kwik Fit do a TVR service which includes all the things specified by TVR that should be looked at in a service for £200. Anyone used Kwik Fit to service their TVR?

600- 1000 sounds about right dependent upon whether its 6000 or 12000 service.

On the kwik fit thing, you're having a laugh.

- Could they get the bonnet off and store it without damaging it.
- do they know how to drain oil from the scavenge pumps
- could they change the coolant without getting airlocks
- could they change the air filter without damaging the airbox (think about the third lock)
- would they set up the throttle bodies correctly
- they probably could do the geometry (but would they know what setting to use).
- if it's a 12,000 service, can they set the shims properly on all 24 valves?

The £200 is a standard "any car" rate - they won't do the job properly and you'll end up having it done again.

Up to you. If you do go down that route let me know, watching would be a new form of entertainment smile

Editted to add: Actually, the TVR thing might be right for an S, Chimaera or Griffith. But not a Cerb or the T cars.

Yep, that is about right for basic servicing costs. TVR's take most of a days labour to service properly, which @£60 or £70ph gives most of the cost.

This is what I thought, but from their website they seem to be selling it as they know what they are doing!

It sounds like if I gave them a call they probably wouldn't know what to do.

I'll keep you posted wink

Would add that if you ever look to pass her on, it aint going to look good in the service history 'Kwik fit" some.. not all look for detailed service by specialist.

I don't know where you are but if you are within a couple of hours drive of Downham Market have a look at Matt Smith Sport's Cars web site, he's a top bloke lots of TVR owners use him and he is very reasonable.

£600-1000 is on the pricey side. 6000 mile service is around £350, 12000 is around £510 incl tappets. It depends who you use. There are plenty of recommended specialists. I wouldn't go anywhere near kwik fit and wouldn't be too impressed buying a car serviced by them.

Just mentioned this post to my wife, as much to say look how much I save doing it myself.
It takes me about a day and a half and that is without doing the alignment as I don't have the kit to do this bit (yet).
My servicing checklist is four pages plus another to record and calculate the valve clearances.
The valves can take over half a day on their own depending on if any adjustment is required, but that also takes into account how financial I am about getting them right, then add balancing the throttles and it soon adds up.

I also mentioned getting it done at Kwik-fit and she burst out laughing.

If they cannot spell quick correctly what chance do they have in servicing a Tuscan properly.

wow, the responses have stured some hatred towards to Kwik Fit.
It was an honest question just to see if people had used them or known anything about them. I've never used them myself as I've never liked the way they work.

I'll delete the thread now as it seems to have irritated some with lesser tolerances! wink

Not particularly hatred. The '12k' service on a TVR - all models - isn't a plug, filter and oil change. There's a list of service items for both 6k and 12k services available online. I sincerely doubt that Kwikfit can carryout a full 12k service on any TVR - let alone a Speed 6 engined model - for £200. It would barely cover the [retail] cost of materials.

By the time niggles were sorted and the odd part replaced or tweaked, I never had a service on the Tuscan that cost less than £1100.

The Evora is massively cheaper to run even going 15k miles pa compared with 5k miles in the Tuscan.

For the record I let Kwikfit regas the sitcom in the Tuscan. They did a good job but I stood over them when it came to removing the bonnet and storing it. In fact I took some old blankets so they had something to put the bonnet on.

Lets be clear here though, it's time consuming, fiddly, and uses a lot of oil (I use millers nanotech which comes out at £150 alone) but there's no mysteries here. If you took the latest can bussed up, direct injection Audi to a tvr specialist they'd probably call nasa.

I've spent the last couple of years rectifying the work done by "specialists"... At the end of the day even they work to a cost.

6k mile and 12k mile services differ quite a bit in prices so a lot more is involved it seems.

Just the tappet adjustment alone is £250 at most places, and I mean reasonably priced places.

Just booked it into a TVR specialist down the road from me for £510 for a full service inc tappets.

Next on the list is the interior re-trim and we're pretty much there.

If I took my S6 engine TVR to Kwik-Fit for a £200 service, I would deserve all I get. Moot though, as I wouldn't even contemplate it.

When I was at David Gerald's last year, I seen first hand the complete mess a non-TVR specialist did to a Sagaris engine and clutch - the owner ended up paying a hell of a lot more to have the shoddy work rectified.

Just. Don't.
