Rolex GMT Master II - Black / Blue (Batman)
Discussion
Looking at buying my first 'nice' watch in the next few weeks, and the GMT Master II black / blue (116710BLNR) caught my eye.
A few questions if I may:
Thanks in advance chaps!
A few questions if I may:
- I had a walk around the London AD's yesterday, and nobody had a black / blue on display (plenty of all black models though) Asked the chap in Selfridges and he said that they normally get a couple of week, but have a no-wait-list policy, so it's first come, first served. Is this just a London thing, or is there a shortage country-wide?
- This will be my everyday watch (i.e. wearing it with a suit during the week, and with jeans and t-shirt at the weekends). Do people reckon it works for both dress and casual?
- I have relatively small wrists (around 6.25") - does the GMT (40mm) tend to wear well on smaller wrists?
- Whilst I wouldn't plan on flipping it, it would be nice if it had decent residuals just in case. Presume it's a relatively safe bet?
Thanks in advance chaps!
I've had my Pepsi dial version for about 8 years now and love it. It is alternated with my other watches as a daily (with suit) and evenings/weekends when dressed casually. Imo it fits in well in all circumstances, but the same could be said for most quality watches. I too have small wrists but don't think the 40 mm size looks out of place, especially given the trend towards much larger diameters these days. As far as values go, I've seen mine nearly double in price since I purchased it, but that was during the recession.
Going by Watchfinder they are selling above list price at the moment because they are in short supply. If you can buy brand new from an AD you won't lose much money. I love mine and it gets worn for casual and smart casual. It's not a dress watch, not that it should stop you wearing it with a suit, however I prefer my Reverso for suit duty. I can only see me changing if I get the chance of one of the new Daytonas with the ceramic bezel. Probably won't be for a while though.
Be mindful that the polished centre links mark easily. Not a massive issue; most of my watches have some patina to a certain extent, but I wouldn't wear it for working on the car, etc.

What's the batman reference ?
The blue black is the Pepsi Max right? Or are we now into naming watches with marvel / DC characters
So the Pepsi becomes the Superman
The green sub is now known as the Hulk
Unless of course Bruce Wayne wears on in the new film in which case.... As you were..

I tried the GMT II on yesterday, and for £5.5k i thought that was good value for a Rolex. But i was a bit disappointed with bracelet and how narrow it is in comparison to the width of the lugs ( that appeared to be wider than my seadweller) it just didn't look right to me....but still a lovely watch and not completely ruled out.
Was very comfy and lightweight

I would put your name on a couple of ADs lists, never seen one on display in London AD. Dealers tell me that they trickle through but a few have also recently said the supply seems to have slowed. For what it's worth, this week I was in Switzerland and the only one I saw was on the wrist of a salesman - again they said they only get a few
What I did notice recently is the prices on chrono 24 seem to be £6.5-7k for a lot of european advertised ones. Maybe that is partly fx driven, not sure what the euro list price is
I have relatively small wrists and it looks fine - I think most rolexes are ok size wise bar the deep sea which is huge
Centre polished links scratch just by looking at them - I am very careful with mine but it made no difference

The first week they were available, I walked into Goldsmiths in Merry Hill to look at a Datejust. The girl there confided in me that a black and blue GMT had arrived that morning and they hadn't put it on display yet. I tried it and could've bought it but I walked out with an Omega Constellation. I am an idiot

You think that's bad? You obviously haven't seen the SubC with its new wide lugs then. Was very comfy and lightweight

No such thing as pepsi dial, only bezel. The great thing about the Pre ceramics is that you can interchange between Pepsi, coke and all black. Very sporty. ExplorerII said:

It is a superb watch, my very first Rolex (and only one) don't want or need anything else. I too have small wrists but it just looks so good and it goes everywhere with me.
Thanks for replies and information everybody - really appreciated.
Think I need to find a dealer which has one in stock and see it in the flesh. Every time I see it in photos, the blue / black looks different (which is part of the appeal I suppose). I work in Blackpool for some of the week and (amazingly) there's an AD there, so will give them a ring to see if they have one in.
My mind's made up that I want one of the following, but I keep switching between the Sub C in black, the GMT in black and the GMT in black / blue. I think I just need to find a dealer with all three in stock and see which one appeals most.
Cheers.

Well excuse me for making such a fundamental error.
Excused.I'd personally save a couple of grand and buy a slightly used all-black GMTC. I prefer the 5 figure serials (on most Rolex's) but the asking price is a joke, especially on the 16710's. I've got a 16610 Sub Date on a Random serial, (2010) - one of the last of the classics and wouldn't swap it for any of these garish ceramic versions.

The ceramic models are much better looking and have far superior bracelets. I'd personally save a couple of grand and buy a slightly used all-black GMTC. I won't allow myself to get sucked into the "it's classic so it's cool as f
k" thing, they weren't "better" in any way than the current models Gassing Station | Watches | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
