I drove a 355 Spider at a dealer recently, and I noticed there were some rattles coming from the roof and/or interior on poor road surfaces. I also noticed a sort of creaking noise a couple of times at very low speeds, which seemed to be coming from the front of the car.

I'm just wondering if this car might be slightly less rigid than most 355 Spiders, for whatever reason.

The car was in Sport mode all the time I drove it - I suppose that could have caused the problem or at least made it worse (I didn't think of that at the time though).

I'd be interested to hear from Spider owners if you often get noises like this, whether in or out of Sport mode.

Mine does. Sport mode should have no effect as i can't tell the difference on the road when it's on or off. This has been covered in a Fchat thread before;

Yep, my spider rattles. Mainly from the roof mechanism, but as Tony says, once the exhaust kicks in you can't notice much! Which reminds me i need to post up the vid of my Capristo at 9000rpm

To be honest i've never had a cab that didn't rattle. My E46 M3 sounded like a bean can full of pebbles had been left in the glove box..............

Yep even my 355B has the odd rattle here or there! How old is the car and how many miles has it covered?

As Stu mentioned, I went with a mate to pick up his brand new E46 M3 Cab from the dealer, rattles and squeaks were present from the roof.

Thanks for the input so far.

Yeah - I know this subject has been covered before (I'm probably doing it to death) but I wanted to get as many opinions as possible.

The car's a 99 - it's done about 13,000 miles.

I took another drive in the car today.

There's a rattle coming from the roof, and on imperfect road sufaces, some squeaks and rattles that seem to come from the dashboard, and then squeaks from the seats too (I also noticed there seems to be quite a bit of freeplay in the seat backrests).

It didn't make much difference whether the car was in normal or sport mode.

The salesman suggested that the cold weather tends to make rattles worse, because components contract. Hmmm.

No creaking this time though.

I dunno... This is the most valuable car I've ever driven, but it seems to have more rattles than any car I've driven. On the face of it there seems to be something wrong there. Do I just need to adjust my expectations?

I think a little. I know i did.

Up until the 355 i'd always had new cars, so i was quite surprised by the spider on the test drive. You have to remind yourself that it's a 10 year old design and as such it's a bit "retro" It was a similar experience the first time i drove a 993...very raw and mechanical.

However, having had my car for a few months, i don't even notice the rattles, you're so connected to the car on the road that it wraps around you.

I think as long as the car itself feels "tight" and drives well, and gets the nod from a PPI, then go ahead.

As i mentioned earlier in the thread my M3 cab rattled REALLy badly after about 6 months and depsite several attempts by BMW they were never identified, and i gave up trying to locate the rattles on my Noble. These bothered me much more as the cars were new, i'm prepared to forgive my 10 year old spider as personality quirks.............a bit like that dreadful electric roof

I'm surprised you got so many rattles in a relatively new car. Mine's a '96 Spider which i've had for nearly 5 years and it's only just started rattling. Make clear your reservations to the selling dealer and insist on the probs being sorted before you put a deposit down. Bottom line is if you're not happy with the condition of car , DON'T buy it.
Good luck.

I have just got a 355 spider, its a 97 in giallo modena. It does have a few rattles, the most noticable being the gearstick vibrating sometimes (only seems to happen in 4th). Very happy with the car though, great fun to drive and very different to the porker.

Thanks for the info, I will take this up with the dealer as they offered to look at it for me.

It doesnt bother me much, and im sure once i get a chance to get the roof down i wont be able to hear the vibration however loud it is!

Cheers

Matt
