£700 Sheddy Jaguar xj6 lwb

Hello all,
Just joined after many years of reading
Finally bought my first car, a £700 x300 Jaguar lwb
It sounds like it needs a new rear wheel bearing
I'm a student so would like to try and keep my costs down, anyone know how easy this is to fix myself?
Apart from that it could do with a good clean and service
Not sure if I like the private plate, although it does make it look even more regal
Also if anybody knows of a decent specialist in the Cambridge or North West area please let me know

Nice looking X300 you have, I previously had a X300 3.2 executive, nice car
I had a rear wheel bearing issue, I put it into a regular garage for the bearing replacement, which lasted 6 miles! before the bearing exploded at 70mph, wheel locked solid and I slid across the A1M
Luckily no damage to my family or the car, other than the bearing seized and pretty much new tyre flat spotted
The garage who carried out the work admitted full responsibility, it went to a Jaguar specialist at their expense and they also paid for a new tyre and covered my car hire costs whilst it was off the road
So, from my own experience, I would suggest getting an expert to replace!

Much easier and quicker to replace the entire hub and driveshaft assembly on a X300 with another one from a breakers rather than faffing about with the pullers and presses that you'll need to change a rear bearing. Chances are the alignment may not be absolutely spot on afterwards but a 4 wheel laser geometry reset will soon sort that.

Looks a cracking motor, there's nothing better than floating about in a big old Jag. Might be worth a look at my thread 'A V12 Sized Gamble' on my previous XJS V12. Currently driving an X308 XJR around for daily duties. Regarding the headlining, the one in my XJS had gone in a big way, someone was using old bed slats to hold the fabric up! From what I remember I bought a new glass fibre board and covering, along with extra material for doing side panels etc. for £150. It wasn't too difficult to fit apart from that it required removal of the steering wheel to get it in the car. Admittedly I've never had a headlining out of an X300, you might be able to save it and use carpet adhesive and stick it back down again to the original board. Removal might require the seats to be removed which if my X308 is anything to go by isn't hard. Just remember to disconnect the battery before removing the seat plug, as airbags can start exploding! And make sure you have your radio code to hand before you do disconnect the battery as it'll ask for it on reconnection.... I'm still driving round with no radio

My XJS hubs were rebuilt by Ward Engineering down on the South coast, not sure if he does parts for the newer models but my God what a masterpiece they were when they came back! Enjoy the experience and don't expect it to be cheap, they know how to drain your wallet in mysterious ways.

I can't imagine living without a radio, but I guess the supercharger noise can keep you company?
The car was on gum-tree and the only interesting looking car in Cambridgeshire for under £1k!

I hadn't considered Gumtree; I'll add it to the list of places to keep an eye on!Then sometimes people just send text offers such as ' I know the cars worth £4500, but would you accept £2000'
Great Car, I got an x300 XJ6 a few months back. Beautiful to waft around in and so much car for the money :-)
As for the headlining, you mentioned the North West, I have had some quotes to fix mine for around £100-£150, or there are all sorts of creative DIY solutions you can try. As a stop gap, I have seen people on the Jag Forums, using furniture screw pins to hold up the worst parts, as it will the screw will hold in the remaining foam.
When I first got mine, I also had a slight whine from the back, but after putting a few miles on her the whine went, it may be that your car has been stood for a while. Well worth changing all the fluids first and giving it a run before going for a full on replacement.
If you near Southport give me a shout, I can recommend some good local specialists.

I took it into the local specialist (Classic Cats in Warrington)
Seems as though someone who didn't know what they were doing had a go at changing the bearings before me a made a pigs ear of it!
£300 later I have a new hub and it is much much nicer to drive
I still need to decide what to do with the headlining, passengers keep complaining that it is hitting their heads
Also, the car looks to be a little lower on one side
Needs further investigation as to what that might be
Any ideas>>>>?
