IIRC this hasn't been clarified in Pistonheads.....

I've got 3 points for an SP30 in October 1998. Am I right in thinking that after 3 years the don't count (if I aquire 9 points tonight they couldn't be used to make a 12 point tot up ban) and more importantly after these points are 4 years old I can send my licence away to get them removed?

That's my understanding. Three years for "totting up" and four from date of conviction until they can be removed.

yep sounds right - for speeding anyway - I guess it's different for Drink Driving or Death by Dangerous though - 10 years on license for those ISTR..

Cheers, If the likes of reliable Mr Madcop confirms this that will be good enough for me.

Just have to figure out the procedure for doing this now.

I think you need to send your license off to the DVLA, and they'll send back a new one with no points on it. If you haven't already got a photocard, you'll need one now. And because its for getting points off, rather than a change of address or other administrivia, you have to pay for a new license too.

www.dvla.gov.uk/drivers/applydl.htm#exchange

Looks like it'll cost you £18.00 for removal of endorsements.

well obviously you'll have to wait until October, but you can send in your license via the post-office.. there's an appropriate box to tick on the license renewal/amendment form you get at the post office..

I just tended to wait until I had to change address as all expired points are removed then anyway...

besides, it was once curiously satisfying to see all 11pts expired on my license & I couldn't bring myself to send the license away immediately..

Edit: You don't pay anything if you're changing address, so hang on and save yourself from giving another £18 to the government.

Always a good idea to get points removed asap.

IT looks better if you're in court having a clean license, rather than having 25 years of bravado chronologically listed for the magistrates to ponder over, when considering wether to give you the benfit of doubt over your latest charge.

Oh FFS, surely I don't have to cough up £18 to quid to replace that bit of paper that comes with the photo licence that I aquired over a year ago due to change of address.

Tempting to change my address again to my parents address then imediately change it back again.

Good idea. They can't prove you weren't in the process of moving when filling the form out. Then 2 seconds after having put it in the post box you changed your mind.

The £18 is just another tax that they think they can justify because only "criminals" have to pay it.
