Spyder or GT4

Any thoughts on the new Boxster Spyder or a Cayman GT4.?

Don't think you'll go too far wrong with either.



Edit...Not driven the Spyder yet but the GT4 is absolutely spot on. That said, Spyder owners are extremely enthusiastic about their cars. GT4 for the track and Spyder for the road? Decision made

More to the point, do you have either on order? If not, are you willing to pay £10k over list for a Spyder, or £20k over for a GT4? Might make your decision easier!

Spyder - looks much better .... although always worried about safety if no roof, so I personally would take a GT4 with a cage

GT4 is sharper in every area, better steering feel, much larger brakes, adjustable suspension, plusher ride, bigger tyre foot print, better turn in, A GT car and has a fixed roof.
The other is a Boxster with 3.8 and sorry to say a roof which is still a poor design, but looks great, the Boxsters a great car and now it has a 3.8 engine.

IF you got a slot either will be free motoring and all are great cars in their own right.

If you did not get a slot a Boxster GTS with a working roof is a nice car at £55k if you want a 981 softtop car and £30k cheaper buy as todays values stand.
or for £65k you can buy a Cayman GTS with buckets etc if you don't want what the GT4 offers, which if you are looking at a 981 Spyder seems more the case, as GT4 owners knew the features they wanted.
some even cancling their Spyder slots once offered a GT4 slot.

Both cars are over hyped by miles imo on PH, Porsche have created a WANT factor and it paid off with these cars, people are ga ga over these 2 new cars !!

OR the older Spyder and R are better drivers cars for feel, 1/2 the price of the new ones and are just more fun and have a great following.

so I have given you 6 cars in the end to think about, all offer something, all great cars, only you know what fits your pocket and driving style.

If I had to pick one for the most fun it would be the 987.2 Spyder, a car I have owned and after owning 65 cars a car I still have which puts the most smiles on my face.
And atm seems the best value car to buy, is rare. only 100 cars in manual, has feel in spades and is one of the lightest cars Porsche have made for years at only 1275kg.
no contest really, £40k and the best drivers car with prices sure to rise.

Spyder really does look the dog's bks. Was at PEC Silverstone the other weekend and they had this in there:



Looked really nice, if rather over-sized next to the 1950's 550.

Spyder every time, I haven't driven the GT4 but I do have a 991GT3RS and I sold my 991 Turbo S to buy the Spyder and in the past have owned over 15 different Porsches.

I don't think I have had a car that makes me smile every time I drive it. Sometimes in not all about the power numbers, price, kudos, Track focused, Road focused, resale overs, flippers, etc etc.

I've never 'trolled' you , I agree with some of the stuff you say when you're not repeating yourself,you're being paranoid ,but you do keep posting the same thing again,again and again.

My thoughts on the Spyder are it's an uglier version of the Boxster. I think it's rarity, value, and hype induce an "Emporer's new clothes" effect in others when they say it looks great. The standard Boxster looks much sleeker and the new 718, despite its return to 4 cylinders, will eat it for breakfast in terms of performance (PDK, Sport Chrono).

If you want a new roadster, consider the 718 Boxster S. The hood even goes up and down automatically!

My thoughts of the GT4 are it's the ultimate good looker, but maybe too focused unless you're planning to use it on the track.
For a road car, the standard Cayman S, or GTS if you want its extra toys anyway, might be a better everyday proposition.
Also, don't forget the new 718 Cayman S will have the same drivetrain as the 718 Boxster S and so will beat the GT4 in terms of performance (PDK, Sport Chrono) for half the price.

If you want a new coupe, maybe wait 6 months to order a 718 Cayman S? Use the money you saved to buy a Boxster.

I've got a Spyder 3.8. It's mega. To qualify that I have plenty other cars and plenty other porsches and did 40,000 miles in a 2011 Boxster S also. The new spyder looks great, sounds great, goes great, stops great and turns great. The ride gets a little jiggly on the worst of tarmac but only if you re travelling slowly. I chose to get a Spyder over a GT4 cos I can take the roof off a Spyder and also the passive suspension is always going to give more feel and more predictability than active pasm, no matter how well it's been programmed.

I would need to have driven the spyder and have some clue about what the op's taste and what his intended use is before offering any thoughts on the matter.
Congratulations on answering the op, a case of post something enough times it may actually be relevant ?

If you need to ask, then probably the Spyder is the car for you. Think of it as a GTS on steroids.
