9k to buy LHD

insurance depends, 800 for low risk, 1500 for medium risk

1500-2000 maximum per year to run

get an 87 one or later as these had the G50 gearbox

88s and 89s probably the sweetest as they improved the 3.2 every year it was made

clutch can be weak, oil leaks from engine barrels v common

good choice

I have an '89 targa and have had no probs with it whatsoever (bought it from portiacraft) its not concours but a good usable car with no leaks or problems that I can see but still under warranty so no worries, one thing I would say is that if I were buying again I would definately get a coupe rather than a targa, firstly they are rarer (someone told me a ratio of 70:30 targas to coupes) much quieter at speed and the targa tops can get a little shabby and cost a fortune to replace or refurb and most people, myself included rarely remove them in the UK. obviously coupes attract a price premium over targas also. one thing I would advise is (obvious really) go and look at as many cars as you possibly can and visit all the dealers to get an idea of good cars and shabby cars, if they are looked after they last incredibly well but if not can cost a kings ransom to put right but are still cheaper than 964's. I think the 3.2s are becoming more sought after at the moment due to there classic shape and relatively simple mechanicals and good ones are starting to appreciate in value (I hope!)also dont be put off by colour as most 3.2s in keeping with the fashion of the times were red black or white (very few metallic cars around) mine is guards red and looks great!
Oh yes try elephant.com for insurance as well they are not bad for my car, just drop the yearly mileage down to minimum and you will get a cheaper quote.
hope this of some help..

Just about to insure my SC for £197. Admitedly it's classic car insurance limited to 6000miles - but hey, you even get free europe wide breakdown cover!

As for running costs - look for the best example you can find and it should cost relatively little.

(I'm 32 by the way. Fully comp as a daily driver would have cost me about £700)
