Why hasn't Porsche made a new 928?

It seems obvious to me. The market is there. A 2 door luxurious GT to rival the likes of Aston.

Basically a 2 door Panamera. But better styling please. Ok, a diesel and hybrid option if you must.

Make the damn thing!

Well yes, I get the point, but whilst the 991 has gone 'more GT', the 928 could go further still.

Perhaps I'm stretching the point a bit, but if you want a luxurious front-engined V8 coupé and you don't mind the looks, would a Lexus RC-F fit the bill?

But more importantly, why haven't they made a 250k supercar/baby 918!

Thanks for taking it in the spirit it was meant in. I don't subscribe to the "if Porsche don't make it then the market's not there" argument. If that were true, Mazda would not have benefitted from the lack of a Lotus MX5.

If Porsche don't wish to make a product that the market will buy, another company may well take advantage of that.

This is sort of the problem, plus, as far as the market is concerned; Porsche sports car = unconventional engine layout (i.e. not in the front), sort of.

That said, doesn't the Panamera share a platform with the Audi A7? I reckon a very nice two door GT/ coupe could be grafted onto the (rather dull) A5 platform.

Porsche wanted to phase out the 911 and replace it with the 928, but in the end they stuck with the 911 to lead the range. If they released a 928 equivalent now and it looked like this I think it would only cannibalise 911 sales. The Panamera and Cayenne appeal to different markets to the true sports cars.

Agree... release something like that at c.£150k, and I think 991 Turbo sales disintegrate.

It would have to be exceptional in the marketplace, with a similar impact and leading edge that the 928 deployed.
Since Porsche have dropped that particular ball, both Aston Martin and Maserati have capitalised. To a smaller degree so have Ferrari with the California.

It's a crap market. Aston Martin and Jaguar are dominating it with fairly bad cars, so the competition is feeble, but AM is not making much money at all, so I doubt it would be worth Porsche's (R&D and manufacturing) time and money to get involved.

I would expect Porsche to take a few thousand units from the existing manufacturers but also to cannibalise at least as many 911 sales.

A 991.2 PDK with PASM etc is about as GT as you can go without making a car that is deliberately bad to drive (e.g. Aston Martins}.
