1) Am looking at IT jobs in London (Help Desk - 1st/2nd line preferably), but have no idea of what kind of salary I could expect as a beginner - any thoughts?

2) I've having new tyres fitted to my car on Saturday and whilst I'm aware of the need to bed them in, how would I go about it? Do I just drive gently for a thousand miles or so, or try and scrub as much rubber as possible for a couple of hundred?

Dunno about 1). Post an 'Off Topic' question with this general query in the headline, otherwise the IT monkeys will miss it.

2) Just take it easy in the wet - new tyres will lose their 'sheen' (if they had any) within a few miles, assuming the rubber is quite new and good quality. Don't worry about 'scrubbing them' - this is something track people worry about.

However, it may be best to take it easy for the next week until you get used to the new handling characteristics. My Dad once nearly spun his 4x4 Audi Quattro because his new fronts were much grippier than his rears...

Cheers Dom - perverse as it may seem, the thought of spinning a Fiat Seicento Sporting seems strangely appealing!

Animal / Umar..

the market is less than slow.. verging on static at the mo.. there are more people leaving companies than joining... I have reduced from 57 employees to 21 in the last 18 months..

..salary-wise, sadly (for you) its a buyers market therefore don't expect much.. 14-16k perhaps ?

Cheers,
Matt

Surf through Jobserve.com for some idea of what helpdesk jobs are paying.

Then note how many different agencies are advertising the same job (duh) and have a think about how many people there are chasing after the jobs. As M@H says, the market is stagnant.

The answer? Get down the pub and get twisted.

Then take away all the imaginary jobs some agencies like to stick there too!

jobsite.co.uk is another one although you'll probably find the same jobs on it

its not the big boss who i have a problem with, its just that i can't move forward in the company. because the compamy is about cars, not computers, they are happy with their, sold called, "IT infostructure" and don't see the need to do anytrhing else, even tho their competitors are doing a lot with things like their website, which are bringing in more customers

i have told them all about this, but will they listen? NO!

Besides, won't give me the the bently as a company car

Very tricky question.. everyone got a bit burned by .com boombust, then the inevetable slip of the financial markets that followed.. I reckon its going to be 9-12 months before things are improving much, although I do get the feeling we are in a "new dawn" already..

as for what to do...(this IS serious) go travelling and see the world a bit. Wished I had when i was younger (28 now) and had the chance but no option now as I have house, morgage, wife and dog..

you'd be suprised how good something like that looks on a cv too !

Cheers
Matt.

Umar,
sorry, whilst my place are have an opening for a support type person (depending on your areas of interest/skill) it is still in Slough, so I guess would not meet your needs.

Sorry,
C

Very very very very highly recommend doing the travelling about thing if you can. I worked for a year after my degree then quit my job to leg it abroad before I got too tied up with careers and so on (and once I had some cash to do it!). Don't listen to anyone who says it might damage your career prospects - it'll make you a far more interesting person to interview and who knows who you might meet or what crazy doors might open!
Also, I've found in my current job that say, being sent to work in Europe for 6 months suddenly doesn't seem half as daunting as it would have done before.

I got my job on the IT Helpdesk via Adecco. I got most of my permie jobs by starting off as a temp then being taken on and all were via recruitment agencies.

Might be worth registering with a few. If you are South then Adecco/Office Angels are the best but word of mouth is best as some areas have preferred agencies.

I always wanted to travel and vowed I would but then a certain "situation" got in the way and the furthest I got was Bristol.
