Summer Road Trip - France, Germany, Belgium - Tips?
Discussion
Evening PH,
I've just booked the accommodation for a week-and-a-bit's sojourn across the Channel with the missus, taking the Cayman for its first big trip.
Our plan is - UK - Reims - Stuttgart - Ypres - UK. There's an almost 50-50 split between car stuff and general relaxing and holiday stuff, hence why we're not going as far south as the Alps, but I'd like to be able to tick off:
- Reims grandstands
- Porsche and Mercedes Museums
- De-restricted Autobahn
Besides this, the route has just been sort of knocked up using Google Maps; starting to put a bit more thought into it now, and I'm thinking, is there anything we must see, or roads we must drive, as we pass through these areas?
Cheers,
Iain

This itinerary requires more than a week, but feel free to pick parts if you like any. I know which ones I prefer. B-)
-In a straight line to Reims, have a lovely dinner and spend the night after visiting the grandstands.
-Verdun – WW1 memorial. Short stopover.
-Via Metz (just for a cup of tea in the lovely old city centre) then through the Vosges (possibly spend the -night in some village there) straight to ->
-Stuttgart, visit musea, Suttgart city centre is well boring so start moving in the direction of (and sleep over somewhere along the Bahnblast to ->
-Heidelberg, spend a day and night there (one of those places still on my list to visit).
-Get to the Nürburgring via route offering the most derestricted stretches of Bahn. (option B take a detour via Trier or another detour that will take you through something with hills/nice B roads).
-Head for Spa (Francorchamps) if there’s something going at that time. I’d pass the one of the breweries of Rochefort, Orval (both Monasteries where the actual brewery is off-limits due to the secluded nature of the Monks’ life) or Achouffe if you actually want to visit the brewery) anyway when anywhere close to the
Belgian Ardennes.
-Spend the night in a small village cottage by a river (http://en.ardennes-etape.com/ lists most) in the Ardennes.
-Blast cross country to Bruges, spend a day
-Ypres (Ieper)
-Some final shopping/loitering in Paris perhaps
