Why the dislike for the Mustang?

I recently looked through the Focus v Mustang thread and was very surprised at some of the strong feelings against the Mustang.
Also I read an article the other day saying it was 'trying too hard' referring to the 5.0 and GT badges. They maybe old school, but trying too hard, I do think so.
We all have our own opinion (I've removed my GT badge and replaced it with a pony) but I don't get the dislike for an iconic 5 litre V8 that costs less than 40 grand (except from the green mob that is)

1. Those who previously bought Mustangs by Personal Import, or from someone who did (a company or individual) are now outraged that anyone can just walk into a Ford dealership and order one. There's even an on-line configuration site to help.
2. Those who previously thought they were better than those knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers that imported such vulgar examples of Americana are outraged that anyone can just walk into a Ford dealership and order one. There's even an on-line configuration site to help.
Basically, it has nothing to do with the car...

Don't get me wrong, I think it will be a good car, but for me that car looks like a Korean design at best!
I want to like the car, but there is no wow factor...it is a bit vanilla.

I did think like you, I have a S197 Mustang for over 4 years, but after seeing a Black on Black Auto Vert I was blown away, and have just ordered a California Special stunning looking motorDon't get me wrong, I think it will be a good car, but for me that car looks like a Korean design at best!
I want to like the car, but there is no wow factor...it is a bit vanilla.

It does not have the same looks as mine, but with the hood vents and indicators its 100% a Mustang
The 'trying too hard' comments came from Guy Martin who said it was a top notch GT, but then went on to say he didn't like the badges that were tying to hard. If those comments hadn't come from a former GT3RS / V12 Vantage owner then they might be fair enough.
Quite different target groups for a 5L GT and a RS Hot Hatch. I am buying one and wouldn't be seen dead in the other, suspect that the same for many in either camp. To add further division I suspect there will be plenty of fastback drivers who wouldnt been seen in a vert also.

Nope not fussed, Yes I agree a lot of people still feel and that includes me, that having a RHD Mustang is not really the tradition, but I was going to buy a UK car, until I found out all the bits they have taken off from the US car, so have gone back to the lefty. 1. Not one person i can think of on the Mustang Owners Club feels this way, Yes a lot don't like the car but that's not because you can walk in and order one, infact a lot of people have gone over to the RHD Mustang, and can't understand why I have gone back to the Lefty

I think Ford will be working on a face lift version soon anyway, they seem to come around quickly these days.

the S197 never changed from 05 to 09 then from the 10 it never had a facelift till the 15
Ford are stunned the amount of cars they are selling over here, that's why the waiting list is so long
I was told they wanted to stop people importing so many cars into the UK, so they brought the Mustang over here and it's worked pretty well so far

Well, speaking as someone who imported a Mustang in 2007 (and onlt recently sold), I wasn't outraged by the new Mustang. In fact, initially the only thing I felt was lukewarm toward it. Then one day the design 'clicked' with me and I love it. Which is why I will be taking delivery of a new 5.0 GT in the next few weeks.
Those who think Euro fare can't be beaten will not be dissuaded - and thank goodness for that.
I hope they remain a relatively rare sight on UK roads, if only to bring a bit of difference tou the usual BMW M and Audi S fare. Oh, and to humble both when the situation presents itself.

Can you provide a suitable analogue? As someone who is deeply involved with The Korean automotive brands, I fail to see any parallel?

I'll agree with the gist of that - the S550 does look good, however it looks good in a clinical sort of way. A computer was told what a good car should look like and then went ahead an designed it. I know it ties in with the whole Ford 'family look' but again to me that cheapens the Mustang look. That being said I do like the interior, very nice, and I have no doubt that it'll be comfortable but... but... but...The engine,gearbox and interior are great, not to mention that V8 sound track. I just wish it looked more retro and brutal.

k yes, but not with my own money I'm afraidI think those that don't like the Mustang are the same folk that don't get it...... Many have been brainwashed into, if it isn't a BMW, Merc or Audi, then it must be crap...... No matter how many good reviews the Mustang gets, there are many that just wouldn't be seen in a Ford, and are happy to pay twice as much for a car that might be a little bit better...
Don't get me wrong, ford selling this in rwd, manual, v8 configuration over here with decent suspension for this price is excellent news, i predict it'll be the most popular version of the mustang ever sold in europe.
I'd have it in black, set the height slightly lower front to back and get rid of those ugly bloody wheels though.
