New R500, couple of questions...
Discussion
Hi folks,
Took delivery of a 2001 R500 last week. Not really been far in it, however, the radiator fan seems to be on almost immediately...assume that's not normal. I haven't had it above 61deg oil temp yet.
Also, I don't have a windscreen, and considering putting one in...how easy is it to do? I also have a full FIA cage...will that cause issues? E.g. Can I fit a screen with this cage.
Cheers
Ali

If that is the temperature its low, I have a Minster specification sheet somewhere and will email you if i can find it, you may also want to search the L7 Clubs technical pages and contact the local club http://www.lotus7.club/area-meetings/scotland-nort...
Hi Ali,
could you explain, where your temperature sensor are installed and if the fan is controlled by a simple thermo switch in the radiator or by the ECU?
I have a R500 exhaust (on a 200 Bhp engine) and in combination with the standard water rail the water temperature sensors seem to be influenced significantly during stand still or in very slow moving traffic by the heat radiated from the very close primaries.
I can switch my fan from the ECU or by the passive thermo switch and there is quite a difference concerning the gauge reading when it turns on.
Cheers,
Felix

I have R500 no 5 and am thinking of going with the interchangeable aero screen and windscreen idea too. If you have the D loop style cage like me, as far as I know you can't fit a windscreen. I'd be interested to know if your car has the wiper motor mounts on the chassis for my plans too. However I assume it can't be beyond the wit of man to retro fit them.
With regard to temps and fan running, I believe the fan should cut in at 74C water temp. It is definitely noticeable that it cuts in a lot more than it did on my previous K engined car. Your low oil temp is probably just a function of low ambient temps, I struggle to get oil temp beyond 60C in winter too despite water temp being 70C plus. I think the oil cooler is to blame but you'll be thankful for it on a summer track day.

Seen a few pics of the D Loop style cage with screens. Although don't know if they're OEM cages... Thoughts?

I reckon you can fit a screen Tim with the cage...and I made sure the fan cut in at around 70 degrees on (my) your car...although that does demand that the battery is a good 'un as the fan saps power.. Your car has the wiper mounts (I removed the mechanism, plugged the holes and sold the mech on Blatchat)
Thanks for the info about the wiper mounts in the car, good to know they're there, one less thing to do if/when I get round to taking the cage off and going to full screen and doors.
However after a rather splendid 2 days at Spa last year, I'm starting to think it may be prudent to leave the cage on just in case I fail to resist the temptation of going back this year.

Interesting, not seen that before. Looking at that cage and the one on my car it does indeed appear to be an OEM Caged one. On my car it looks as though it would be a very tight fit though to get the stanchions between the cage and the car.Seen a few pics of the D Loop style cage with screens. Update: spoke with Darren at Catering Parts. No, is the simple answer. You can't fit a screen with our cage. Doh! - You can change to the other cage with easily enough which is around £900+vat.
Screens, they've not held a stock in two years and only get about 15 in a week and they are currently negative 100 in orders! They are looking at having them made in-house, but that solution is unlikely to happen overnight!
hummmm! - Balaclava and a biggles goggles it is then!

I have to disagree with Darren, I have a 2003 ex Academy Chassis, it has a caged Double D SLR cage, and when I took delivery, it had a full screen fitted. This is the actual car.

So it can be done..., me, I took the screen off...

Nope standard SLR cage, and yes the cage does shroud the station bolts, but I managed to remove them just by undoing the cage and pulling it slightly, it gave me enough room to remove the screen.
No I was suggesting the opposite. That the front legs of the cage were modified to clear the stanchions if that makes sense?Tazio77 said:
