New Thames Crossing
Discussion
Just been emailed by the Dart charge people about plans for a new crossing further down the Thames from Dartford. Seems govt plans are for a tunnel near Sheerness/Tilbury.
Assuming this isn't an early April Fools and apart from costing probably two and sixpence halfpenny, how much would it REALLY cost and how much benefit would there be? Would it just mean we can get through Essex and Kent that much quicker?

It is very definitely not an April Fool. Nor will the new crossing be anywhere near Sheerness which is on the Isle of Sheppey opposite Southend-on-Sea!
It will run a little to the east of Gravesend and Tilbury - https://highwaysengland.citizenspace.com/cip/lower... - the estimated cost of what appears to be the current most likely route option ranges from £4.3bn to £5.9bn. What the final total will be remains to be seen. It is unlikely to be operational until 2025.
Long term, shifting the majority of HGVs going to/from north of the river and Kent/the Channel ports away from the Dartford crossing will be a major benefit AFAIAC.
I live in the Kent catchment area and went to one of the open days last week. There was plenty of detailed information (more than just the Route Consultation booklet in the link above) to take away for those who are interested. Fortunately I was able to go on a weekday afternoon which meant that there was time and space to have an intelligent conversation with officials who actually had an in depth understanding of what is being proposed. Well worth attending if you can imo.
