MK7 GTD - Pure white 2016

Recently picked this up. Coming from a 2006 GTI which was a cracking car. Owned it for 5 years and sold it for 5k less than I purchased it.
It's a 2016 GTD 184 with tech pack including rear view camera. Also xenons with light assist, carplay, half alcantara/leather(tete) seats, 18" nogaros.... the usual GTD kit.
It's a car that divides opinion. Some people are very dismissive, a bog standard 2.0TDI with average performance. Others like it.
Had a good long debate with myself before purchasing. I will be doing approx 15,000 miles a year for the next 3 years. Including a commute of around 400 miles twice a month. I really enjoyed the GTI, but when you made use of the pleasing performance the MPG was pretty terrible. In Ireland the GTI is actually around €1500 cheaper than the GTD, so I'm still not certain I made the right call, but I think I did.
Impressions so far are pretty good. I love the look of it. I personally think the 18" Nogaros are amongst the nicest stock alloys around. I really don't like the 18s on the GTI so that's a tick in the box. The interior is great. The leather and alcantara trim I like, I think it lifts the interior a little. MIB II infotainment is pretty decent.
How does it drive.....? I preferred the MK5 GTI. It sounded better and was faster. Some of that is no doubt down to it being less refined, but this thing is refined to the point that you are at 100mph very quickly but you don't believe you are there. It's quite impressively quick in the mid-range. Below 1800rpm it's sluggish. I may look at a peddle box or a DTUK box. It pulls nicely from 1800 to 4500 rpm. Feels almost petrol like. MPG after 1000km including one long drive of 500km (but I was doing 140-150kph) is 42mpg.
Interesting to see how I get on with it. I may end up in an R next year yet!
