Looks like the first round of the Welsh MTB XC series is being held at my local stomping ground Llandegla.

I notice they have a fun race for men and women which has got my attention.

I'm not the fittest, but willing to give it a go (I do a mixture of MTB and road riding), rides of 2-3 hrs on the road bike.

It looks like the event lasts c2 hrs and is around a 5km course made up of fire roads and single track.

I have a 75 mile sportive the week before, so should be reasonably in shape for it.

Bit of an open ended question, but how out of my depth am I likely to be?

Not out of your depth at all. The fun race isn't an all out XC blast, it's aimed at people just like you, get entered and enjoy it.

See if you can find results from a previous event and compare your average speed to theirs.
I have an idea of mine depending on terrain.
Top riders can easily average 20mph.

Chuck an entry in, fun race should be about enjoying yourself not winning. If you are at the front end of the fun race think about moving up a category next time, sports or vet depending on your age.

IIRC the Scott mtb marathons (the word is used loosely!) have a couple of rounds near you this year. Choice of 50, 75 or 100km loops. Their effectively sportives, looking at last year, a big element took it as s race.
