steering wheel extension

hi can anybody advise me on extending my steering column can this be done if i simply replace the standard 93 cooper wheel with an after market boss and wheel or is there a boss with a long reach its just that at the moment the driving position is almost perfect but the wheel is tight down on my knees and its hindering the gear stick i know i'm going to get loads of replies saying its the right driving position with your legs stradling the wheel but i know this position can be improved upon by just pulling the wheel out 1.5"
any suggestions anyone

You could try a deep-dish wheel - I have an Astrali and the rim is a good 1.5 - 2 inches nearer to me than the boss.
