It's at least 25 years since I last rode a road bike. I converted at school to cyclocross, then mountain bikes, and stuck with muddy tyres and suspension ever since.

Anyway, everyone seems to be riding on the roads, so I've borrowed (with a view to buying) a mate's Specialized. It's a few years old, but pretty low mileage and seems in good nick.

So, first impressions, it's much faster than a mountain bike on the roads. Set loads of best times on Strava this morning. Second impressions the roads are largely awful. Pot holes and poor quality tarmac all over the shop.

Downsides, 15 miles with a tailwind is fine, but means 15 miles into a headwind on the way home!!

You'll get the main benefit into a headwind! Keep tyre pressures right up to avoid pinch flats.

Full mudguards I hope wink
