Rescued Renault Clio 172
Discussion
Further to my thread on debating purchasing it, heres pics of the 172 i've bought.
Bit of background - its been lying in the sales yard of a friend of mines this past nine months or so, and i felt a bit sorry for it. I negotiated a "fair" price for it, with the aim being to MOT it, service it, and perform some tidy up on it, then maybe buzzing about in it for a little while, then sell on.
Spec wise, its a 2002 Clio 172, fitted with Cup alloys. Other upgrades - added 80 miles ago (but 9+ months) are
=> GAZ Gas adjustable suspension front and rear
=> Strut braces front and rear
=> Induction Kit
=> Decat
=> Big bore exhaust
=> Brembo ventilated, grooved discs and pads.
=> Four brand new tyres
=> New battery

Goes on thursday to my mechanic of choice for a full check over, full service and MOT prep.
Jobs after that are
=> refit standard stereo
=> rebuild second key (in about 4 bits in glovebox)
=> new fitted mats
=> alloy wheel refurb in anthacite
=> replace aerial on roof (removed and gromit fitted)
=> new induction filter (rusty)
=> full polish and valet
=> see what history i can piece together about the car (loads of receipts in glovebox)
I'm going to use this thread for updates on progress, so more pics to follow.

That's looks clean
Cam belt and dephaser pulley ? Have they been done
Supposedly. Theres 94K miles on it, so it would / should have been done. Theres a bundle of receipts in the glove box so i'll check when i get it home. If theres no evidence we'll have to go looking.Cam belt and dephaser pulley ? Have they been done
No noise from dephaser pulley on startup though which is a good sign.
Car seems clean - has just sat for a very long time so i'm leaving it with a guy to give it a good check over.
Felt sorry for the wee car. Its just sat there looking unloved

Dephaser will make a noise when the oil has warmed up, give it a good run and check for any noises then.

Also, look at the bolts that hold the front/top bar on (between the lights where the bonnet locks into) as it needs to come off to do the belts, so the bolts will have the paint chipped off them. If they do not then I suspect it has not had the belts changed.Dephaser will make a noise when the oil has warmed up, give it a good run and check for any noises then.
I love 172's and would like one as a bit of a fun car. Prices around Manchester are around about £1500 for an unloved example though.
I prefer the 5 spoke none cup wheels on silver for some reason, However i also like the newer anthracite wheels as fitted on the 182's and cups.
Lovely car and hope it was a bargain.

Well worth saving and should be great with some TLC. Mine is identical to yours (except I've got a cup spoiler) and has been my daily for getting on 5 years now. It's never let me down and is great fun to drive. Maintenance is easy and cheap too!
Yes, i'm looking forward to getting it sorted and on the road
Well so far so good with the repairs.
Mechanic rang this morning and for MOT it needed :-
=> Two track rod ends
=> Hazard warning light switch (Second hand)
=> Headlight tightened up
=> Suspension adjusted (reset height on GAZ coilovers)
=> Battery retaining strap
I've also to get :-
=> Rear number plate light (£6.99 ebay)
=> Number plates (£12.99 ebay) - wrong font size on current ones
=> Exhaust bracket For whatever reason some numpty has cut the bracket off the stainless steel back box, so i'm getting a guy to weld a new one on, and put an exhaust mount on it next week. (proper exhaust building place)
And then its off to MOT - i'm in NI, so we have to take our cars to a government run MOT centre.

Well thats the clio through the MOT. Had real problems with emissions - Hydrocarbons were off the scale.
Ended up putting a coil pack, leads and plugs on it, plus a Cataclean through the fuel tank.
So passed today
New induction kit to be fitted, then need to start to clean it up.
More pics to follow then

How's the 197?
The 197 is great. Not as raw as the 172, particularly as the 172 had coilovers which made it quite harsh for everyday drivingBig downside - and worth knowing in advance - is that the timing belt (and diffuser is recommended) should be changed at 72,000 miles OR 6 years. With just 52K miles but 9 years old mine was overdue a change. Which relieved me of not an insignificant amount of my hard earned.

But loving driving it - flat out everywhere usually!!

Have done my usual - new factory fitted mats, Bosch aeroblades, new number plates and new anodised wheel nuts. Next job is likely to be stainless steel exhaust tips (as per clio 200) and then the alloys powdercoated in a mid grey anthracite.
Pic as it is currently...
