Check security of aerial co-ax...if necessary continuity of central core and shielding. Check earth from aerial base to chassis(braided wire along front lower chassis square section).
Assuming head unit powers up OK, can't think of anything else that would prevent reception?

I also had basically no signal.
I checked the aerial in the wing and it was fine.
I have since fitted a rubber ducky version in the engine bay using a small metal plate that I made up bolted to the chassis behind the oil tank (using an existing bolt on the chassis) so that it is as upright as possible. The original aerial was too big to put there.
Being rubber it bends slightly at the top to fit under the bonnet.
My main concern with this approach was the heat under there but so far it has been fine and I have done approaching 1000 miles since fitting it which has included traffic necessitating the fans to kick in.
This now means that I have some signal, rather than none, so although not ideal it is better than it was.

OK, Mike....but to me, this implies that either the original telescopic FM aerial in the wing void is (somehow) u/s, OR, the co-ax between it and the head unit is u/s?I checked the aerial in the wing and it was fine.

I'm assuming you had a new co-ax 'tail' from the rubber ducky aerial...which you ran to your radio? By doing this you've confirmed an issue with the original set-up? The rubber ducky will be a lot nearer to electrical 'noise' sited under the bonnet.

I unplugged the telescopic one here and pugged the rubber one in.
I did not run new cable to the stereo.
Also by moving the telescopic one around I could get a signal (mainly by just putting it upright).
I appreciate about the electrical noise but it does not seam to be an issue although I was expecting some because of moving it closer to the engine.
