Anyone know what's happening with Gucci watches?
Discussion
Hi Folks
Both my wife and her Mum have Gucci watches. Both very different styles of watch but both probably 20 years old now.
One has recently been playing up so was sent away for repair and one was sent for a new battery and service to authorised repairers and both have been returned as parts are no longer available for them. In both instances Gucci have come back with vouchers for 50% off another Gucci watch.
They both really like the watches, particularly for sentimental reasons so would love to get them working again but what options do they have if Gucci say parts are no longer available? I'm assuming the movements will be used by other manufactures and wouldn't be bespoke to Gucci?
Is there an issue with Gucci if they're no longer stocking parts or just a case of old watches so not enough demand to keep stock?
I did remind them not to buy watches from a handbag company!
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers
James

Gucci are a fashion brand.
Their "service" department does little more than swap new movements for old so, when a movement becomes obsolete (which most 20 year old quartz ones are), they offer a new watch.
The good news is that the movements they used back then can be serviced if needed, it's just that replacement (when it's possible) is quicker, generally cheaper, and more suited to the skills of handbag machinists
eta: The above "can be serviced" is obviously assuming there hasn't been any damage by water or battery leakage, in which case parts can be an issue - but are usually available used if not new.

Thanks for the advice guys.
One is the 9040m shown in the link below and we've been told they no longer have the seals to reseal after replacing a battery. All works fine, it was a graduation present for my wife from her parents so it has sentimental value. My wife made the mistake previously of getting a battery changed and the seal wasn't replaced and the watch misted up so she got it sorted straight away. Fortunately no damage but she's wary of not having it sealed properly again.

The other is a much more fashion piece that no longer works - no more details on what the issue is though.
Do you have any more info on the guy in Edinburgh as we're up here, tried a google search but nothing coming up. Any other recomendations for repairers?

Surely they're having a laugh with "seals no longer available".
The back seal is either a bog standard O ring or a standard nylon taper seal and the crown seals (if needed) are also simple O rings, although the crown seals can be a bit of a PITA to replace because they expect you to just replace the crown as a unit.
Seems they're using "Not available" as interchangeable with "would rather sell a new one". Virtually certain I could have that resealed to better than their 3atm (technically only splashproof) rating from stock. If not, suitable seals could be on next parts order without a problem!
Without knowing the movement on the other one it's hard to say but they're all repairable
