Just happen to have a week off coming up and coincides nicely with RMCH 2016. It's a few decades ago since I stumbled through the midnight forests in search of Escort BDAs and the occasional Stratos. So the Alpes Maritimes is the plan in late January but, as a first timer, would be really keen on any feedback/advice you may have. Plan is to take the daily workhorse (VW CC)rather than anything classic so car reliability (probably!) not a worry.

My current idea is to stay somewhere central like Castellane or Sisteron and start with the Saturday morning confluence at St Andre des Alpes. My wife will be with me so we'll probably take in just one or two stages daily rather than actively following the whole event, and have a "day off" for sight seeing on the 3rd competitive day (the Ardeche loop from Valence).

So any views re the best viewing stages, accessibility, need for snowchains etc would be much valued - presumably the final night loop taking in Sospel> Lantosque is a must ??
