has anyone installed a/c on s1
Discussion
As usual HungryJIm has got it wrong. Aircon can be fitted on the S1 it wasn't an option in Europe but was available in places like Malaysia.
Also the Exige can have air-con fitted and I believe there is very little differerence between the cars that would prohibit the air-con being fitted. Its probably this unit that the dealer is thinking of installing.

All Elises in Hong Kong are fitted with air-con bar two S1's. They are from Hethel and not Malaysia.
Unfortunately, the system is not efficient in the heat of summer here and is totally useless once stuck in a traffic jam.
It also causes further problems in overheating besides power sap.Interesting enough, one of "solutions" is to remove the thermostat and run the coolant through the radiator which causes car to take ages to warm up. It still overheats but a bit later.
The aircon compressor takes the place of the alternator which in turn is raised to the cylinder head bang next to the exhaust manifold. You then have regular alternator failure because of the heat and vibration.
I subsequently removed the aircon system and remount the alternator to standard position for engine, exhaust manifold upgrade.
If you haven't got aircon, my thought is not to bother. Bring a shower cape with you for quick showers and drive topless all the time.

My S1 is one of the last made, and was bought through Germany - it has A/C and is LHD as well. Since the engine was removed to make way for a Honda VTEC we didn't get around to sorting out the A/C compressor yet. There isn't much room for it but I'm told its possible... meanwhile I get hot (but then I'm in California so shouldn't complain :-)
