Suggestions please: £10k track car
Discussion
I was looking at something very cheap so that me and the lads could do a Nurburgring trip next year. The choice is:
205 GTi 1.9 fairly cheap and quick, pick one up with tax and ticket for ~£500.
309 GTi 1.9 as above but a bit cheaper.
Mk2 Scrote because we have a garage full of old Capri bits, suspension, V6's etc.
There are plenty of performance bargins now, best thing about heading to the Nurburgring is we may only need a one way ferry ticket for the car!!!!

The lad 205 is a good idea, i have one with an mi-16 but they cost circa 7-8k, and the 205 is a fairly old car so even done up they look a bit like a shed.
I also picked up a cheapish sub £6k, but vgc / low mileage 306 rallye recently and think this would make a superb track day car if you do the following
basic strip (lighten by 100-150kgs in 10 mins)
spare wheel & basket
rear wash wipe
rear seats (base one unplugs / upright needs just 2 screws removing.)
rear belts removed.
rear shelf
sound deadening & carpet from boot (lifts out)
remove jack and wheel brace
Then to finish (from demon tweaks)
fit bilstein sprintline suspension kit £550
set of x-drilled / grooved disks & comp pads £250
Peugeot sport group A exhaust with dummy cat £140
set of yoko A539 tyres £160
Peugeot sport thicker anti roll bar £150
£7k all in! If you want to spend a bit more then 210bhp of gasflowed engine is about £1200, a pair of decent buckets and harnesses £500 and a cage £300 making it circa £9k for a very well sorted track car.
the 205 was faster round donnington GP than a NSX and modded Griff so the 306 should be about the same, but my guess a touch easier to drive. being newer you are less likely to get so many niggles.

good point, but you should follow a 306 or 205 round a circuit they oversteer like a rwd car!
rwd means bmw 325i/328i/M3, nissan 200sx or caterfield. Which means a bit more wonga or taking a chance. tuning parts are a bit more to boot etc
Think the 306 will get an outing at Donnington tomorrow!
Dont forget most of the touring cars are all now fwd and lap most circuits in a time approaching that of the GTO cars.

How about a 200sx? I saw one up at knockhill a few weeks ago and although it wasn't the fastest car of the day, the two guys in it certainly had the largest grins. They were having a great time, especially out of the hairpin before the main straight(!) 10k should get a relatively recent one with a bit to spare on a few track orientated mods.....
Rear wheel drive, laggy turbo and a damp track...
just my 2p's worth!
moonie
I’m doing similar with a old mini I have, I’m getting 1275 engine (free) Roll cage (£30) bucket seats (swap for original interior) the car was bought for its number plate so doesn’t owe me anything, I have some old alloys and koni shocks, then a quick go over with the spray gun should look half decent. Not going to be quickest thing out there but should be a laugh.

pre 72 MG Midget, bore it to 1380cc and stick some race cams and some steel pistons in it. take off the bumbers and lower it by about 30mm. then stick a roll bar on it and go embarass the 911 owners....... actually this is my plan (C) me 2002
Embarass 911 owners with a 1380cc Midget!!!????
