DB9 Drive Line/rear engine chatter
Discussion
I have just purchased an 05 with only 14,500 miles. There is a light chattering sound coming from what appears the rear right side of the engine or maybe the drive line, You cannot really hear it when you lift the hood. it is not there when cold but appears when warmed up, I just drove 350 miles and it did not get any worse. I have listened all around the engine and it does not seem to come from there, more noticeable under the car. Any ideas..is there a pump or some such back there? Other than that car is performing amazingly and of course just stunning to look at...maybe I missed the point your are supposed to look at it not drive it :-)...NOT ME!

Yes it's an auto. Chatter seems to go when under load, as in engaging drive, and gets worse when at idle. I wonder if they all do this. Certainly the springs could be an issue? Thanks I will continue to review the noise and see if anything develops. I am going record the sound and see if anyone can confirm this is normal or at least acceptable. It could be that the car has done such few miles (<1400 since 2012) that things have become set or corroded).
So if it's the drive plate, which sound likely.... is this something that is broken and HAS to be fixed right away, or is it something somewhat benign that can wait? I am not happy with anything out of the norm, especially on an low mileage Aston. The car is now being transported down to Florida where I will have an independent specialist look it over. Any thoughts much appreciated....of cause my issue is I just want to drive the hell out of it.

My personal opinion,,,, i have heard the noise on many cars, and especially with yours being such low mileage, i really wouldn't worry. I haven't heard of one falling apart. I have seen the springs fall out of a clutch plate, but they are put through much more abuse. You'll probably never notice the noise once you've driven it for a week, and it probably won't get any worse over the next few years.
congratulations on your purchase, if its the same noise my 2005 has done this since i bought it at 16,000 miles , still exactly same at 26,000, its a known and harmless 9 issue "prop rattle".
ive pinched this from BR post
"Prop rattle.
Heard at idle, not from cold start at fast idle but when oil warm and at normal idle speed. Is worse / best heard sitting in drivers seat opening door and listening from below sill. Press throttle and make engine speed rise above 1500rpm the rattle will go, allow engine to idle the noise will return. Is an engine related problem, noise is result of uneven combustion, typically a coil which has gone down or slight misfire for another reason is present. The uneven firing pulsations between the banks results in a rattle sound travelling down the torque tube and is amplified by it."
I had coils and plugs at last service and its exactly the same, seemingly there is an ecu update that can help but as long as it doesnt get worse
im not too worried about it.

that's great advice if the problem is actually what is being remotely forum guessed as being from folk who fixing cars isn't day job, but bad advice if simple drive plate is not root cause. You'll probably never notice the noise once you've driven it for a week, and it probably won't get any worse over the next few years.
the advice should be, its probably nothing so dont get alarmed but instead of remote forum guessing, go and get it checked by someone who knows!
hopefully the problem is indeed simple and drive plate, but what if its misfire and the noise is prop rattle, what if its left this way, misfire fails cat, engine ingests cat, engine rebuild needed for a fault which could have been a low cost fix. This sort of pattern is actually what is seen in alarming numbers at the sharp end as cars are ageing, and advice stemming from perspective of shiny new cars looked after by prototype doesn't apply too well to cars 10 years old
Well, back with the rattle, which has been there since I bought the car, as advised, drive and ignore...that is until it gets worse. My Independent said it was misfire, new plugs, coil packs etc...still there. He swore it was the secondary cats rattling, something broken inside??? I am saying no, transmission related. Well cats are gone and the noise has not....so FINALLY its the drive plate! I know I can get a new plate for about $550, anyone have any idea whats involved (work and in hours) to replace this? Cant get any labor time from AM
Sorry car now in shop being pulled apart. But I can describe it. The sound comes from under the car and appears to the underside of the driver area or slightly to the rear. It’s a chattering sound, medium pitch, no grinding of tinkling. It manifests itself when in drive. Park or neutral it mostly goes away unless you have a misfire (bad coil packs), which can also create a similar noise. The sound travels down the torque tube and gets amplified. My car has run over 2 years like this with no issue, but recently it got worse so my shop burnt through $5500 of repairs before we got to “I told you so”

Well I do not have the car back, but it's all apart and the drive plate has broken springs, but not the main big springs but the smaller ones, when it's all back together and running I will update...I hope after all this expense it is now perfect
Great I hope that's fixed it for you. Hi Gentlemen,
I have that noise on my 2004 DB9. It can be heard sitting at the wheel or at passenger side. Only at idle, engine just warning up. It seems to come from needle bearing at the back of the crankshaft and/or from front propshaft bearing. How long the car can be driven with this noise.
Thanks a lot and regards.
