I was just wondering what brands/grades of oil you other air-cooled people are using. Fully synthetic presumably? And what do OPCs and specialists generally use when changing the oil?

OPC's only use Mobil 1 (Although I havn't had dealings with an OPC for a year or so).

Any decent fully synthetic oil should be fine, although I've always used Mobil 1.

Yes, Mobil 1 seems to be common consensus on this. Even the independent garages chuck it in (well mine does).

I would be tempted to try Mobil 1 Motorsport 15W50 rather than 0W40, but haven't yet. It may be worth asking the question because I always thought normal Mobil 1 was slightly too thin.

The Motorsport vs regular Mobil 1 debate has been raging on the TVR forums for years... as has the fact that in the UK, Mobil 1 is 3 times as expensive as it is in France or the US for no obvious reason.

Its because in this country we are stupid and just pay the price without making any fuss - thats why we get ripped off for everything

Mobil 1 15-50 here, car seems to like it and it's only about £2.50 ltr here, so it gets changed often.

All right, don't rub it in!

Looks like my 10 year stint buying Mobil 1 is set to continue then.

I'm used to buying all DVDs from either the Channel Islands or Australia as both are much cheaper than the UK, so maybe I should investigate importing a quantity of Mobil 1, say 100 litres or so

I think you'd find it hard to convince customs that 100l of Mobil 1 was for personal use only. Especially as you don't own a TVR anymore .

Just kidding!!!!!!

I wonder if PCGB or the TVRCC could get together and do a "Mobil 1" convoy to France. Stick a load of Mobil stickers all over the cars, drive to the nearest stockist and buy their stock.

"Yes, sir. This bootful of fully synthetic oil will be going in my car, sir. Oh yessir, yes it will." "Drinks it like it was going out of style, oh yes!"

Ref oil for ya porker. Older aircooled pork can find Mobil 1 a bit too thin and guzzle it a bit and yes many people do use Mobil 1 Motorsport in for that very reason. If you like mobil and want a semi synthetic Mobil Super S its very good and suitable for all non turbo pork. However lots of the Porker specialists (independents)use the Castrol range with Magna-Tec very well rated(it is a semi synth)and the Iguana gives it his vote.

Castrol slx is a rival to Mobil 1 and is also a 0w oil but again as with Mobil 1 oil consumption can be an issue. If ya want a slightly thicker fully synth oil use Castrol RS (10w) just like the motorsport boys do.

Its not just old porkers that dislike Mobil 1 the high tuned AMG Mercs tend to guzzle it a bit too, switch 'em to Castrol Magna-Tec and the oil consumption stops!

Ps- I don't work for Castrol!

I heard that VW had issues with premature wear on turbos that they blamed on castrol synthetics, anyone else ? or this an unfounded scandleous rumor ?

You will always get wear on turbos with too thin an oil - not just a VW problem. This is because the turbo bearing 'sits' on a thin film of oil. Too thin and it doesn't float properly.

That is why I always used to put 15W50 in my Lotus Carlton - 0W40 would have shagged the Garretts.

Try Shell Helix, I use it in a 944 turbo, lots and lots of track miles, changed every 3000 miles. Cheaper than Mobile 1, dosn't burn away away as fast as thin Mobile 1.

Buy all oil in French Hypermarkets, half the UK price, same grade, and generally 5 litre pack instead of UK 4 litre.

Mobile 1 goes into my wifes Merc diesel, yep thats right. Merc dealers put Mobile 1 into diesel cars.

It's very quiet in here today, so here's an entirely gratuitous picture of the thing that will be needing the oil

I had to take out the CD player to get the luggage in though.

Nice looking car. Consider the sports exhaust for it, though. 993s sound fantastic with them, and they don't add a lot of noise at cruising speeds.
