I was having a bottle of red last night thinking about my "best buy" (intending to keep it forever). And the winner is:

997.2 C2S or GTS -> each with a manual and the 20mm sport chassis (most importantly the limited slip diff which come with it), chrono and loud exhaust ..

IMHO these cars are good value and might keep this value as

- 997 is the last compact 911 and not many 997.2 were build
- more practical than a GT3 but much more fun to drive than a TURBO
- Manual NA 911 a rare thing already (post 2009 cars for engine reliability)
---> show me the alternatives within the 911 world

I was confirmed looking at the "Sportauto Supertest" back in 2009 -> a 997.2 C2S on described sport suspension (and cup tires) ran the Nordschleife in 7:50. This is almost equal to the 997.1 GT3 and not too far behind the 997.2 GT3 (and the infamous GT4 which did it in 7:40)..

I just put down my deposit for one of these rare 997.2S with sports suspension (anticipating prices to go up after my post ;-))

Congratulations, although I expect prices to tank now you've bought one.

They should be a good buy, but the 2wd manual GTS with buckets will command a premium and hold it best.

Doesn't buying a car to keep forever make future values a redundant factor?

I wouldnt worry about the LSD, to be honest. You are some driver if you are short of traction in a 997, and LSD is likely to be barely functional in any case.

But you sound cooler, just like quoting the 'Ring time. It's just nice to know what it's capable of with the right equipment, i'm sure.

On that note, if you do treat yourself to some Cup 2s during the summer, you'll need to make the geometry for more aggressive take advantage of them.

Out of curiosity, have all GTS cars got the -20mm suspension? Because personally i think they all sit way to high.

Not all GTS had the -20mm sport chassis option (also came with the LSD) but in my opinion even with it they still looked too high, albeit better than a stock GTS.

Mine now sits perfect on its H&R springs...

As said it comes with the sport chassis option. Having driven both I found the factory lowered (20mm) car much firmer in a bad way than the stock ride height so I avoided it even though it doesnt look as good for sure. Whether diy lowered GTS on Eibach etc suffers the same I have no idea.
