What bike thread - MTB for my Son

My son wants a mountain bike for his 13th birthday.
He is tall for his age 5ft 7 at a guess and is growing at a steady rate.
I have two road bikes and know nothing about MTB. Any pointers? Budget around £400.
We had a look at Evans yesterday just to get some ideas, I think he will go more on looks and name.

Get him the one he likes the look of then, if he likes it he will ride it more. In all fairness if he is still growing then the next bike will be the important one so dont get too hung up on spec etc. I appreciate this means he may well want to see it in the flesh first and thus you are ruling out the likes of Canyon, Radon etc ut you're out of the Apollo realms but well within entry level MTBs at that sort of price.
One of my other ideas was to take womens size mtbs and paint them black or red so they would appeal to teenage boys! Great spec, proper kit and not pink or purple frames!!!

I don't think Evans have that great a choice and the prices are not the best.
At this time of year you should look at 2015 models, great deals at the moment.

If not then brands to look out for in this range would be Cube,Scott, Trek, Merida and Giant.
Go for 27.5" wheels as 26" is becoming pretty obsolete.

He's 13. He will want one that looks the dogs, full suspension even if its "rubbish" components. Chunky tyres and big disk brakes that he can skid the back wheel on.
Get him a £400 hardtail, you and me will know its a good bike, but his pal on his £100 "full suspension" setup will be taking the p*** out of not having rear suspension. There 13, get the one that knight rider would want, the one ali G would ride. When he hits 6ft 5 in a couple years time you can get him a proper bike.

Knight Rider? bloody hell its 2015 not 1985!! I guess you are correct to an extent but you're assuming the OPs son doesnt know much about bikes, if he actually wants to ride this new bike off road and take in the trails, a full sus is going to be cack. My son turns 12 next year and is outgrowing his 24". I want to sit him on one of these (one size frame only, nice low seat tube though)
Getting really good reviews. Lighter and better equipped than the much more expensive OnOne Fatty and won't weigh any more than a budget hardtail with bouncy paperweight fork and crap tyres with no grip:

I've seen a few people attempting to pedal these thing uphill and every single one of them looked unhappy. I'm sure they are hoot when its muddy and sandy but I struggle to see the point of them for normal every day trails.Getting really good reviews. Go for a more current wheel size like 27.5, with some reasonable spec components I.e deore, rockshox. At that price point, look at some of the current 2015 bikes being cleared.
At least then you could transfer the majority of the parts over to bigger frame as he grows.
Or just buy a gate sized bike that he'll grow in too, like my patents did.

Went to look at the Boardman, took it for a spin round the shop. I have to say it was very nice, especially compared to my MTB which is nearly 20 yrs old.
I managed to pick a new one up on eBay for £371.00 so I am well pleased. It has got me thinking about getting a better MTB for me so we can go out together.
