A colleague's husband has bone marrow cancer and she asked if I'd do the Ride London for the Anthony Nolan Trust. Having done a fair number of imperial centuries I felt it'd be a little fraudulent to ask for sponsorship for a 'challenge' I've done several times, so I've decided to Everest instead, 8848 meters of ascent on one hill in one ride.
The plan right now is embryonic, I'm searching for the right hill ATM, my thoughts are ideally 8% ave with no 12%+ ramps, I want a really consistent grade more than anything.
Suggested hills in the sussex kent borders welcome as are fund raising strategies.

Nice one J. If it's a solo effort I will come and assist, sherpa if you like, if possible.

62x Firle beacon (10%) or 9x AdHuez (8%). Know which I'd prefer (x1million) so get the Saab booked on the tunnel beer

Firle appeals but the descent is pretty sketchy, ADH is obviously iconic but I'm thinking local roads and get a small donation from local bods to ride up each ascent with me etc

I'll try and Sherpa too, depending on when. I did Boxhill in a team effort in May, perfect for it in many ways. 5% average gradient, smoothest road surface anywhere I can think of, cafe at top and bottom. The speedbumps were a bit of a pain, it got quite busy with cars at times - frustrating when you can't even roll downhill without braking - and having a car full of stuff literally right at the top where we were turning was almost too convenient. 67 repeats for our attempt, don't think there are many hills around that won't involve as many repeats as that.
It was definitely more a mental challenge than physical, I was thinking / hoping to do it in under 20 hours but it took 27; and that is a long time to be thinking about how long it was taking.

Are you looking for the 'first Everest' of a particular hill or just repeating one already done? Finding a hill which hasn't been Everest may help with that added motivation.

A small number of my riding group have done this to tremendous support

They deduced that the sweet spot was 4-5km at 6% or so

I would have concern that a hill of 1.3km wouldnt let you get into much of a rhythmn and would be bloody boring too whilst the 10% gradient would just kill you

Clearly youre limited by geography but have you considered making a weekend of it?
AdH isnt a bad suggestion if a little steep - what about one of the Yorkshire TdF climbs?
Did you have a favourite?

And good luck - big respect

Beeley moor 40 times.

It's quiet, very little traffic, but it's been everested before. 6% for 3.6km

Let me know if I too can provide any assistance on the day. Support car / riding (pacing) / bidon filling / standing at the side of the road / whatever.

awful lot here about everesting my local hill; Streatley

not me I hasten to add, but I saw him in action; watching a chap with carrier bags on his arms coming down a 16% is always noticeable. And he was at it for hours.

Good luck in finding a hill, I rode up my local hill for the first time yesterday (as it is a dead end road) and it struck me as a good hill for everesting https://www.strava.com/segments/629644

Thanks for all the suggestions and offers of support, I'll be calling those in for sure.
Location wise I'll be sticking to Sussex as the logistics will be simpler and I can try and get my LBS and club involved.
I'm looking at one of two climbs up to Brightling at the moment, it's the highest point in East Sussex which gives it some cachet and it's not been done before. The only local road that has been is Kidds hill in the Ashdown (fk that I'd die, full respect to the guy that did!)

Willingford Lane up to Brightling. Nice quiet road that. Parking area for a few hecklers' cars at the top.

This would be a little easier https://www.strava.com/segments/643272 . Only slightly down the coast.

I think Toys would be pretty tough physically, and can't it get quite busy? I also think there is a corner or junction or bunch of houses about half way down which could give you a fright at speed. It's ok if you're doing it once or twice, but if it is 60 + times I would avoid anything with a dodgy junction, or even a risky turning point.

There's a proper mountain in Italy which would only need about 4.5 repeats, I keep thinking about...

I think the 14% ramps on that would do me in after 60 reps, next road over maybe. https://www.strava.com/routes/3533198

Not enough elevation gain, it'd be 110 reps! that'd be a 500 mile day!

Yea should have thought of that, the zig zag road to Beachy head is a bit more punchy! Lots of reps but short.

As above worth keeping an eye on the descents

I was doing some hill laps last summer, decent little climb, but with a steep downhill bit of the loop. In the end I had to stop after 6 laps as my brakes were just fading so much braking for a T-junction at the bottom (40mph - 0mph with gravel!). I'd imagine this will hit your pads and rims hard , obviously some descents are much harder on components than others

I'll also offer to Sherpa if I can. May try something similar in the spring.
