So I was looking around for a watch as a birthday treat for myself and fancied going for my first vintage watch. After much searching I found this Omega Seamaster Chronostop from 1966, it was working, But also in Peru. What attracted me to it was that it had a telemeter rather than the usual Tachymeter. I had never seen or heard of a telemeter and did some digging, turns out it is a rangefinder of sorts. To make things a little more interesting it would appear from quick internet research (I could be very wrong as I'm new to watch collecting)that a telemeter on a watch with miles as the measurement is even rarer as most appear to be in KM.

Anyway it didn't have a strap either, but it arrived yesterday and today I got to polishing it with the dremel to clean it up a little. I plan on getting a Omega Nato strap for it this weekend.

Here's a pic for now.

Edited to add a couple of better pics

Great looking watch, I love the "large" chronostop. How was buying from Peru? I often see stuff for sale from ther but have shied away from those locations!

Yeah I do like the look of them, its much prettier in the flesh. I will take some better pics later. Well it was on eBay, and I was a little nervous, but the seller was a jeweller there, he had lot of other watches for sale, and had really positive feedback. I had also had some conversations with him for about a month before I bid, and he was quick to reply.

It was posted UPS on weds and it arrived Monday as described and working. All the blemishes, scratches etc, I was aware of.

Overall I'm very happy with it, looking forward to wearing it.

Lovely - I do have a soft spot for the chronostops.

You are braver than me buying from south america - so many franken watches come out of there, particularly Uruguay and Argentina

This.

Of course they do have originals too, but South America is almost as prolific as India when it comes to re-dialling knackered watches and flogging them as quality timepieces.

One of the biggest problems is that watches do not survive well when worn in high humidity climates. It's not just the humidity, its the wearer's sweat. The seals go* and the dials and movements rot. You have to be SO careful buying from these areas that for me it's not worth the risk.

I'd love to see some pictures of the internals is you're able OP.

*Seals go "Arp, Arp, Arp" actually.

yes, this is true. Im still relatively new to getting interested in watches, so I have a lot of learning to do.

Here are some pics of the internals, these are the pics the seller took (based on the scratches on the case, it does match the watch I have, so I don't think they are pics of another watch). I do intend on taking it to someone to open it up and have a proper look too.

Picked up a strap for it today, got one of the Omega Nato straps, originally was going to go for the all black one, but the orange edges I think complimented the stop timer hand.

Still need to do a little more polishing, but getting there.
