Hi,
I have asked a similar question about this before but a twist has made me more curious now !

Basically every time the petrol cap is opened the "OIL LEVEL" warning light comes on and wont go off until I add some extra oil !

Now I have tried turning off engine and then back on again but the sign stays on!
Only when a small / large amount of oil is added does the light go off.

This happens every time the petrol cap is removed.

My car goes through oil like petrol and Im curious if anyone has any logic behind this.

For ref : My car does not have any leaks on the garage floor etc. and have only done 2,000 miles in her and used 5 litres of oil in that period !

IIRC the car checks for oil when the cap is open - i.e. it does not constantly monitor the level. That explains that.

As for the oil usage - that sounds awful! If there's no leaks then you must be buring it....you would notice the smoke behind you though I'm sure. Has soemone driven behind you recently to check?

Mine certainly doesn't use that amount...

I've only ever seen the oil light once in alll my time of ownership! (and it was low, not a malfunction).

Which opening are you pouring the oil into Pete?

Sorry - no help at all, but it does sound as though you need to get it checked out.

Pete,

DO NOT WORRY!

Some cars use more oil than others. My car uses a similar amount of oil to yours. I went through the same panic but again was not leaking oil or noticably burning it. Just seems to be a feature of the car when they get over a certain mileage (according to the 3 dealers I consulted).

Castrol have brought out a 10W-60 fully synthetic oil which is (so I am told) half the price of Selenia and just as good. Can't see any reason why you can't use this. Here are some details: www.castrol.com/castrol/productdetailmin.do?categoryId=82915276&contentId=6008719

Worryingly, the spec on the FL UK website (they make Selenia) states that the Selenia Racing oil is to be used for up to 10,000km - yet Maseratis running on this oil have 20,000km service intervals....

Nick
