Hi m8, I know your a vid editing guru, so hear goes.

I have some movie clips my friend took of me driving at the weekend .. my question is, what’s the easiest and best software package to remove the number plate, just in case the vid got passed around and into the wrong hands, so to speak?

forgot to say its in AVI format .. straight from Digicam's microdrive.

Are you sure the subject of the .avi is a car? (...just wondering )
CleG - There's quite a few packages knocking about,
Avid DV Express
Final Cut Pro
Premier etc
Unfortunatly all of these are around the grand mark, (unless you've picked up my e:mail) and will import .avi files with no problems - the capture card in the computer needs to be compatible with the camera - i.e. firewire both ends etc..
You'll need to use a plugin effect such as
Mosaic - which creates that pixelation effect telly uses when people are innocent.. just specify which area of the screen to trash..
or maybe Title Tool - which simply conjours up a box for entering text, set size, set background to Black and presto, black box a la readers wives
After that it gets a bit fiddly 'cause your car will obviously be moving (not a big assumption?!). You need to apply the effect to the area you want to obscure on the first 'picture' of your sequence, then 'track' that area throughout. The process is called key framing - you don't need to key frame each picture just every so often, the backward/fordward motion of the car is the most fiddly as you need to adjust the size - the further away it goes, the smaller the car gets, the more car you obscure etc.

Come to think of it, if you'd have sent me the file I could've done it on the posh box we've got here, - in the time it's taken me to type this!!

..and if I get too many requests from this, I'll charge!!

Thanks m8e .. i have just borrowed premier and I think it must be missing the cameras codec, as it wont open it.

Someone was on about needing after effects? god knows.

I am emailing u the file to look at poss see if its its worth me bothering with?

I was just interested to learn .. as I planned putting a few together.

After Effects is a set of plugin 'effects' www.3dlinks.com/software_plugins_after.cfm that enable you to recreate Lord of the Rings or Star Wars type effects - you need the proccessing power of a small planet for most of them to be cost effective in High Definition, but for most home applications you can use it make your stuff more amusing.

So now you have some picture chopping software, here's the lowdown on polishing the turd:
Maya £3000.00 per PC
Keylight £1700.00
Tinder £8000.00
Boris £17,000.00 for the full package,

Oh, and there's some decent free stuff around
