Just started looking seriously into resurrecting my old 1994 Orange P7 and over the years of non-use, the wheels have gone missing.

I'm finding it hard to find anything that isn't totally wrong for the period (ie plastered with huge logos) or isn't something like a Chris King/Hope build and therefore some ridiculous sum of money.

They don't need to be high end, I'd just like some Shimano LX (ish) hubs, and silver rims that will take rim brakes - for less than £100

Any ideas?

worth asking if they are 7 speed.

It's also possible to fit spacers to cassettes allowing you to fit a 7speed onto a 8/9 speed hub.

Looking in to that option too.

Every time I see something I think is right, it turns out to be disc only and no braking surface.

Or the seller won't post and they live in the Outer Hebrides.

Or they will post, but they live in Outer Mongolia and it's going to cost more than a new car to ship them

I have some mavic d521 rim brake wheels in the garage, they are 8 speed so you will need a spacer, they have deore hubs. The rims are the dark grey colour.

I've bought a couple of sets off the bay. Both are unmarked. Presumably taken off new bikes to make way for upgraded and then just left in a shed.

I'm bidding on some at the moment - but if that falls through, how much would you take for your wheels?

Thanks

Check out the retrobike forum. Very active for sale/wanted boards there.

I'm on it...

Wouldn't you know it, a nice looking pair has just been posted after I placed a bid on some on Fleabay.

Just out of interest, why are you looking to resurrect it? I'm not particularly hung up on having the newest of everything, but rim brakes on an MTB frame would be an absolute "bin it and start with something else" point for me.

If you really care about originality, you need to head to retro rides and bear in mind some people will pay a premium for period correct stuff.

Otherwise http://www.rosebikes.co.uk/article/shimano-8-speed...

Space for £1.50 (okay shipping is a lot, but they'll be available elsewhere)

Mavic XC717 rims still come with braking surfaces and are very good - Superstar are currently having another one of their clearouts - you can buy a new set of wheels with the XC717 rims for £200 or so, more than budget I know, but very good vfm and will last a long time.

Because it's an absolute classic bike.

It's in a sorry state right now, but it was a great bike in its day.

1994 Orange P7 with the nickel plated frame, full XT throughout with an upgrade to XTR rear mech. That was a £1,000 bike 20 years ago.

It never came with disc mounts, so it won't be getting upgraded retrospectively.

Everything else works on it, including the XTR rear mech, (though the front XT is a little stiff) so I'm trying to get hold of period correct, or at least sympathetic, parts to bring it back to life.

I realise, it would probably be cheaper and easier, to buy another one. There's a 1995 one owner bike on gumtree with hope hubs for £185, but then it wouldn't be 'mine'. rolleyes

I have a 199X P7 which has been with me since it was bought new. Wonderful frame. Now fully retro'd singlespeed with all the bits I couldn't afford then; Hope Ti wheels, XTR V's, Pace Carbon forks/stem and the usual smattering of USE and Xlite. Badly needs a respray but otherwise lovely. Proper little rocket.

As for the "why" question? some people salivate over classic bikes as well as cars y'know!

I've also got a 2000 P7 and would have liked to get one again in about 2010, but it went all 'jump bike' on the frame geometry.

You can't like posts on here but:

I can sort of understand that, but there have been a few absolutely seismic shifts in technology on bikes where stepping back before them would be just too big a step backwards for there to be sufficient compensatory factors in my mind. The biggest two which spring to mind are indexed gears (although I don't know if MTBs ever had non indexed gears?) and disc brakes.

I can understand that too.

Part of the reason for doing this is because I ride bikes every day I've always wanted to learn the necessary skills to strip and rebuild a bike.

And if you're going to do it, then it may as well be on something which is considered a true classic.

I'm not sure if it will even get that much use when done, but it was a bike a lusted after since launch so when I got my hands on one about 17 years ago, I wasn't going to pass it up. It got ridden into the ground - hence its current sad state.

My first MTB in 1988 was a Raleigh Maverick. Pretty sure that just had friction shifters, while my second in about 1990/91 had Shimano SIS shifters. They were indexed, but only had the one lever.

This does (did) have indexed gears - though on this bike they were the particularly fragile X-ray grip shifts which seemed to be made out of the same plastic as they made music cassette boxes out of and they are now fubarred so I've sourced some new (old) ones.

As it happens, since I'm replacing cassette, shifters and chain, I may as well go all 8-speed anyway, so that makes it a little easier to get parts and means I don't have to worry about spacers.
