Discussion
Am having a look at gearbox options at the mo. and would ideally like a Porsche G50/52 from the 911 Turbo as it has LSD.
However, I've seen from other sites that you can also buy a standard G50 (which are a lot easier to find and less expensive) and replace the diff with a Quaiffe ATB for about 850 quid (I think).
Any suggestions as to the best way to proceed?

Hey Stig,
Hate to see that no one has replied to this question yet. I'm sure others can give better advice, but I'll take a stab at this. First, take a look at this website info on gearboxes. Its excellent. Whichever option you decide, you will need to specify with Ultima what gearbox you'll be using. The standard G50 can be outfitted with an LSD, and what most people like about the Quaiffe torque sensing unit is that it doesn't require much servicing like the clutch pack units. An LSD will also help on slippery roads. Regarding the short(G50 vs. G50/50) or long(50/52). They're very similar internally(with the LSD and R&P exception). The G50/50 and 50/52 have some additional strengthening in the case as well. If you go with a standard G50 and add a Quaiffe unit, then you may have to pay for setting up the Ring and Pinion. To do the job right requires you to dismantle the gearbox. If the dimensions of both differentials are the same, however, then you may not need to have the R&P resetup. I've rebuilt my own G50, and I have the Porsche service manuals for the G50 and G50/50. The tools for the R&P setup run about $1500 U.S. alone. I'm not sure what your local rebuilders will charge. Personally, I bought a rebuilt G50 (w/o LSD) and then rebuilt it with PowerHaus II gears. I'm not convinced that my car needs a LSD, and it doesn't rain much where I live. Others will have differing opinions I'm sure, but I'm running 500+hp and haven't had any problems with reliability or traction. Hope this helps.
Cheers!
