993 C2S Engine Whine
Discussion
Hi All.
My lovely car has developed an engine whine (over and above the usual flat 6 whine).
As far as I can tell it is coming from the back...engine bay area...and comes on when I'm in 3rd and when I accelerate from lower revs (c.3000 ish). It is only there until c. 4500 then it either goes ...or is drowned out by my dansk exhaust. It doesn't seem to reappear be there as the revs reduce but I'm going to experiment more tomorrow to ID the conditions more precisely e.g. hot or cold, other gears etc.
I've looked online and there are some similar requests but nothing that quite matches this. I know, from 20 years and 8 air cooled 911s, that whines can be particularly hard to diagnose and cause premature ageing if you're an obsessive listener like I am.
The car has recently come back from a particularly expensive (c.£10k) fettling at a local specialist. One (small) part of this involved new cam covers and timing chain gaskets. There was also (though I don't think relevant), new front windscreen and rust treatment, new discs, brakes, pads, rear suspension arms, and I could go on... I will take it back to them when I get the chance if I can't solve it but before then I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on tests / ideas / things I can look for? The engine still pulls like a train btw and apart from this noise it's a great drive.
Thanks!
