Postcombe as a village lacks community feeling as it has never been a parish and has no village hall etc. It does have a petrol station/shop and an MoT garage. The pub is Royston Vasey stylee ie not good. The M40 noise is not too bad on the eastern side of the A40, where I live (I am on the edge of the village). We can barely hear the motorway when inside the house, and do not hear it at all when the wind blows from the east. In the garden we hear varied levels of whooshing, but have become used to it.
Tetsworth up the road has a good pub, village hall, village cricket, antiques centre, restaurant, and so on, but is blasted by the noise. Lewknor has a good pub and village hall etc. and is on the west side of the M40 so is usually quieter, as the wind usually blows from the south west. Sydenham would be have been my village of choice if I could have found the right house there. Very pretty, quiet, rural, good pub. Pyrton is another good one, but has no pub.

Cheers, we looked at a house in Sydenham but as with you it wasn't the right house for us so we ended up in Marlow Bottom. The Brightwell/Britwell villages look good, and the Lord Nelson at Brightwell Baldwin is a fine gastropub. Fingest lovely, great food pub - the Chequers. Turville also pleasant, Bull and Butcher another good food pub. Christmas Common, maybe? The Fox and Hounds* varies as it changes hands frequently. The uber gastropub is the Charles Napier at Spriggs Alley up on the ridge above Chinnor. Double parked Ferraris, helicopter pad, Heston Blumenthal eats there on his day off. Get a cab home!
* Called The Top Fox. The other Fox pub down the hill in Watlington is called The Bottom Fox. Good eats there. House of Spice a very good curry place.
