On the lookout for the best mountain bike I can get new for £400 that would suit a relative novice, I really really don't want full suspension either! Any pointers or recommendations would be great! Cheers.

No specific bikes spring to mind, but Paul's Cycles is generally a good bet for a bargain. They usually have last season's model, or the one before that, on sale at a heavily discounted price. You should be able to get something like an entry level GT, Kona, Giant, Trek etc etc for your budget.

As an example, this Cube has a fairly decent spec for a budget bike. Rather nice looking thing, too! http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/m1b0s2p4689/CUBE-AIM-...

Many threads on this. Try this B'Twin from this thread only the other day.

Whilst the 540 is good, the 560 is so much better in every way. And its still within your budget. Infact thats a fantastic price for what you get.

These bikes take an absolute hammering. I've had my RR8.1 for two years now, its done a gazillion miles around various forests and Welsh trail centre red/black routes. Nothing has broken on it.

Buy it, get the bug like I did, and expect to buy a bigger big in a couple of years time biggrin

The Decathlon bikes are great value, but I always like to point this out to people too: http://m.evanscycles.com/products/pinnacle/ramin-o...

It's a bit of an oddity, but it's got a great spec and looks like a lot of fun.

I bought the 2014 Vitus Nucleus 275 last year and have been pleased with it.

Similar thread the other week. The BTwin rockrider 560 is currently on sale £400 reduced from £500. I bought one two months ago @ £500 and it is superb. You will struggle to do better for £400.

Bargain, especially with Deore/SLX gears.
