997.1 C4S - Possible Exhaust Dust on Rear Bumper
Discussion
Hoping the collective intelligence of the forum can provide some reassurance or guidance on the possible exhaust dust I noticed on my 56 plate 71k miles 997.1 C4S earlier today.
First image here is the left side of the car. Looks 'normal' to me. Is the condition of the exhaust tips a concern?

Second image here is the right side of the car. Looks unusually dirty here. Is this something to be worried about?

Appreciate your insights, comments, stories, jokes, wind-ups, and of course any helpful advice...

This is how the engine sounds when warmed up. Just returned from 20 minutes of normal driving.

In terms of possible reassurance: were you parked on a steep slope before you went on that drive? This can sometimes allow oil into one bank of cylinders (and not the other). I'd wash it off and see if it happens again. As someone else said a bore scoping worth doing for peace of mind - and probably as part of regular maintenance schedule on these cars.

Was parked on a small incline, facing uphill, and I topped up the oil a few days ago so might be begign.Happen to be popping into an OPC tomorrow (separate PASM issue) so will ask them. Will also have a boroscope done.
Appreciate your help.

I don't suppose someone could have parked behind you and left that from their start up? I think I would be washing it off and seeing what reappears before scoping it.
+1 And wrong side for (classic) bore score which affects R bank (partic no 6) which exits via N/S exhaust. Pattern looks wrong too. Don't ask me how I know

Sounds perfect. Not that scoring leads to any noises at first. Just clean the spatter off and see what happens.https://www.youtube.com/embed/yItdLw2LPhE

Not meaning to hijack this thread but my drive is sloped - could this be a problem long term as I leave it parked there during the week and tend to only use it at the weekend. Would it make more sense to face uphill or downhill ? - or should I just get a life...

By all means please hijack...
Would be useful to know.
What's the car? 997.1?
Actually got a 997.2. In the BMW motorcycle flat twin world (I also have one)there is some debate whether leaving the bike on the side stand can led to engine problems due to oil draining to one cylinder. That earlier comment got me thinking although I imagine it wouldn't be an issue with either version of the 997.

As far as I can work it out it can happen if the slope is front to back or left to right - it seems to depend on the position in its cycle that the engine stops and how that relates to the slope to determine how the oil flows as it settles. I'd guess how the engine cools will also be a factor, as well as how much oil was on the underside of the pistons when the engine was turned off. Not sure it's too big a deal other than wasting a bit of oil. The important thing is that any smoke in the exhaust is just from start-up - if it keeps smoking whilst the engine warms up it is a sign of a problem.
Was a much more common thing with 9x6 and seems to happen only rarely on 9x7. Haven't seen it at all on 9x1, I guess as the design has evolved/ improved.
I've been thinking of running a more scientific experiment and then realised maybe I should get a life!!
