I know I've asked before but I was having a good long think just no.

Now, I spoke a Ferrari dealer at the NY motorshow regarding putting a 360 challenge car on the road. He told me that as the car is never issued with any road going paperwork it cannot be put on the road.

Now, my question is. If you buy a challenge and you are registered as its owner with it registered at your home, could you not use the car abroad on the road? I am assuming no as you would not be able to insure the car as it cannot be registered for the road. What about under some sort of show and display/other trickery?

Bugger, I hope I have not answered my own question.

Given as people convert Tuscan racers to road use I can't see why you can't convert a challenge car. You just need to get it SVA approved (or something like that...)

Surely a Stradale is what you're after...?

You still got the Ferraris in your profile?

No, I really want the full blown thing. I was just wondering if it was possible. The Ferrari chap was absolutely adamant that it couldn't be done as they cars don't come with some paper work that you'd need to get the paperwork you need to road-register them.

Have been casting my eyes over at www.carclassic.com at the race cars and wondering if anything could be done. I am really not into these comfy sports cars and like the rawest experience behind the wheel. I will save the comfort for old age thanks very much.

I'm not sure that I can be that much help but I have seen 348 and 355 Challenge cars advertised for sale as road registered. From memory, I think VAT needs to be paid and a handbrake added but, as others have said, if it has been done before...

Interesting. Perhaps the chap thought I was planning to put it on U.S roads hence his response.

I will fire an email off in that case.

Ta for that

I'm sure it can be done in the uk - if it's possible to build your own car from scratch and get an MOT + tax then converting a challenge car to pass the mot shoudl be possible....

It's more than just the handbrake I think- lights, indicators, emissions spring to mind too. I rather think you'd end up with a Stradale by another route. I drove a 355 Challenge car that had been converted for road use, and if it hadn't been for the dash layout and the badge on the back (worth LOTS to the male psyche!) I wouldn't have known.

You'd need to get it through SVA. Lots of us kitcar builders do it, but getting a production car through is more difficult as you need to get it through ESVA I think. It's like an MOT but issues will include handbrake, lights, and particularly sharp edges both within the cockpit and external.
