Problem with 2015 520d regeneration?
Discussion
A friend of mine has one of these with the new Diesel engine. It seems to have a problem a couple of times a day when the exhaust becomes quite loud or it sounds like the exhaust anyway
BMW have told them that this is normal however it's quite frustrating for them because this wasn't disclosed at point of sale that this was a characteristic of the diesel???. The noise in the car is actually quite loud when it does it, it's annoying them to the point that they want to change the car.
They believe it is a fault but are getting nowhere in terms of rectifying it. Is this a known issue and do any other customers have the same problem. As they use it mainly for town driving they have been told that this would happen every day, if they had been told this they probably would've gone for a petrol engine but the lack of information at point of sale has led them to believe they bought the wrong car. Anyone heard of this at all?

Hi, I have the older diesel engine in mine but the change in tone when the regeneration is on is also noticeable, particularly when in stop start traffic. I do lots of motorway driving so it rarely intrudes. Unless it is very noisy your friends car probably doesn't have a "problem".
Most modern diesels will do this hence the unsuitability for drivers who mainly drive in town.
I guess criticism of the Dealer sales process will depend upon if your friend went in to buy a diesel car or went in to look for a car that is most appropriate for their use.

Really????I can also imagine your 'friend' driving along when the car bings at them and then 30 miles later, the car splutters to a stop. They get out and exclaim "The dealer didn't tell me I had to put fuel in!"

No that would be ridiculous, they are not stupid!!I can also imagine your 'friend' driving along when the car bings at them and then 30 miles later, the car splutters to a stop. They get out and exclaim "The dealer didn't tell me I had to put fuel in!"
The noise is such though that its happening once or twice a day and if that is normal then it should be divulged as for most peoples that would be annoying hence why they believe there is a fault!

If the noise is due to the particulate filter trying to regenerate, it should not be happening every day. That would point to the regeneration being unsuccessful so the system tries again. Eventually this will lead to the particulate filter getting blocked and that means a big bill.
He could try giving it a run up the motorway with the revs above 2,000 for about 30 minutes, or he could bring it to a dealer who can force a regeneration using the diagnostic computer.
BTW: I have a 320d, two years old, that is used mainly on the open road and I have never noticed any difference in the sound.

But they didn't know a diesel would sound like a tractor? and they are frustrated the dealer didn't tell them! The noise is such though that its happening once or twice a day and if that is normal then it should be divulged as for most peoples that would be annoying hence why they believe there is a fault!

I agree and the car was new in Feb and now has 1500 miles on the clock. If it's doing it twice a day then there is a problem as it won't regenerate or is it something else?He could try giving it a run up the motorway with the revs above 2,000 for about 30 minutes, or he could bring it to a dealer who can force a regeneration using the diagnostic computer.

That is not normal as you say but BMW say it is, now it's a stalemate.

Yes they did. Read the thread. This is not a complaint about the sound of a Diesel engine but a specific issue that happens twice a day for about six miles of driving where the is a loud noise under the car not near the engine. If you've got nothing useful to say then it's best to say nothing at all.

They've been miss-sold the car and the dealer should change it.Skoda had problems with this when DPFs first came out and quietly changed taxi drivers cars. When we bought a Golf about 3yrs ago the dealer asked what kind of use the car would get and confirmed that we should buy a petrol (I was going to anyway).

As mentioned, it needs a good run to get hot enough to execute the DPF cycle. If they've only done 1,500 miles since Feb, then that suggests short/local trips where the engine isn't getting up to temp sufficiently. That is not normal as you say but BMW say it is, now it's a stalemate.
They should've purchased a petrol car.
This must be a 4 pot anomaly, saying that I don't think there should be a loud noise? I have a 330d and have never heard a noise during regeneration and in fact I can't even tell when it does 'its thing'.
I would suggest that if there is a concern just ask BMW to run a diagnostics to read codes if any.

BMW had the car for two months hence why it has low miles. BMW UK were involved. They have been told there are other examples of this "problem" but then all of a sudden the car came back and they were told "its normal".
I think its a new engine issue and until there are enough customers with the same diagnosis there is no fix.
