I'm looking for a cheap car to get me to work and back so that I can by a westfield for trackdays and sprints and so on. I was looking at golf gtis for around 2500 and have spotted lots of old 944s for about the same money. They all seem to be 82-84 2.5l cars with varying mileages and varying history. All I need this car to do is the daily commute and I need it to be reliable. Are these cars going to suitable for this kind of use?

The only 944 experience I have is a friend who has an s3 which appear to be built from granite which is encouraging.

Any advice or experiences with 944 of this vintage would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

My uncle has an '83 944 which has done about 140k miles and cost him about £1800. I've been in it several times and it feels pretty good for its age, although the interior is a bit tatty.
It was good enough to persuade me to buy a '91 944 S2 a couple of weeks ago!

I forgot to mention that I'm quite happy to fix anything that goes wrong and service the car, do the brakes, change shocks and all the other age related stuff.

I joined the Titanic 944 register when I started to get interested in buying a 944. Lots of useful info on the web site. www.titanic.co.uk/944

If you are happy to do the work then costs shouldn't be too bad. New parts are easily available through alternate suppliers like Euro, Berlyn Services etc. and second hand bits through Porsch-apart and others. Quite a few bits are cheaper for the earlier cars too, with the struts being rebuildable and the front ball joints not being a sealed part of the lower A arm.

They will be less reliable than later 944s, but if you can do some basic stuff yourself they should be OK to run. Over 10 years old, so stuff goes...
