My GTS has been faultless since I've had it, but today it's started making an additional noise at idle. A bit like a worn water pump. However, it goes away above about 1k revs and it doesn't do it all the time. Nor is it very loud.

Normally I would be unbothered but I need to do a few miles over the coming days.

Any ideas what it could be chaps please?

Does it disappear when you switch the a/c off? If so common sign of lower than ideal refrigerant levels in these cars. As I discovered recently frown

Actually no, it doesn't go away with the air con off. Also whilst it does fade above 1k revs it doesn't diminish linearly as revs rise. It sounds like a pump of some sort. All of which said, the engine is running very quietly for a Gen 2- no tappet type noise. Perhaps it was always there and I didn't notice.

How many miles has it done? As said, water pumps are known to fail.

37K is certainly not excessive, but its not beyond the realms of possibilty for it to be a noisy water pump.

Are you able to have a look underneath and check for any signs of coolant leakage? I would also check your coolant level.

No signs and the level is fine.

Did yours become noisy or just let go?

My guess is I am hearing the early signs of noisy water pump bearings.

That would be my guess too. In this case you need to get the car in and on a lift and have this confirmed -- or eliminated -- and in either case whatever the cause is fixed. Pronto.

There is nothing to be gained by nursing a noisy water pump and a lot at risk if the pump bearings get bad enough the impeller makes contact with the engine block.

What does a worn water pump sound like?

It seemed quiet yesterday.

Presumably if the pump were to ruin the block it would be covered by warranty?
