Stelvio & Klausen Passes
Discussion
There's a large Lotus Elise contingent going to Stelvio this year sometime mid September . . .

I'm planning (although the pic makes me think about checking conditions first) to cross these passes in the next 3 weeks . . .

Blimey,
That Stelvio pass looks a bit of a challenge!
Bodo, where did you get that web-cam picture from?
I haven't driven up the Klausen pass, but it has supposed to be great, i plan to make the Pilgrimage there sometime in the future.
Have you read the evo article which they done on the Klausen with the Lotus 340R, well worth a read if you can get hold of it.
And if you go there tell us all about it FFS!!!

It's actually saved from this morning.
You'll find the latest at

which is also linked from above Stelvio-page!
DAZ,
usually the pass is not covered in snow in august!! therefore:

Thanks for that Stelvio or Bust information - must say that sounds good. I was supposed to be at the Nurburgring that day, but I might well change plans if feasible to do the Stelvio instead, and the do the Ring in subsequent days. I feel a plan coming on....
I remember the Evo article on the Klausen Pass - really nice article. I was trying to find it but couldn't. That one will have to wait until next June.
Thanks for the replies to date.

There's always what must be one of the most entertaining stretches of motorway - the Brenner pass - if the higher passes are blocked.
OK, so I'm sure it's not nearly as entertaining as the Stelvio et al, but then you're less likely to find your sportcar stuck up to it's front spoiler in snow or mudslides.
Must admit, I've always fancied trying something like the Stelvio, but would be a little aprehensive about getting stuck up there if the weather turned.

I went over the Stelvio a few years ago in September and it was very sunny and brilliant fun.
Unfortunately I had left the UK in an old Triumph TR4, but that developed terminal problems with it's diff at about Reims in France, so I had to continue in a crappy Renault 19 hire car !! I was particularly pissed off when half way up the Stelvio whilst thrashing the arse off this Renault to be passed by a convoy of classic British sportscars - TRs TVRs Lotus etc.
Never mind. I'll do it again sometime in a proper car.

l did the Stelvio late July this year in an Ultima, a long held ambition. lt looks great from the bottom and still looks good half way up. This was part of a 2500 mile blast across Europe, 7 countries in 7 days. l covered a number of the passes this year and 2001 but would recommend others over the Stelvio, although it depends what you are driving. The Stelvio has about 47 hairpin bends. This is just the hairpins, not the others, and when they say hairpin it really is 180 plus degrees turn. Some of the bends are too tight to take a sports car round in one go. I found I needed to drop back half way round the turn to avoid hitting the stone wall. I also need to turn by driving on the left rather than the right. Problem here was that cars coming down the pass would stop to watch this weird race car and of course they would be in the way. The weather was OK but rainy at the top. The road surface is ok but at the top it is really bad. With 3 inches of ground clearance at the front splitter this was a worry. Horses for courses I think, difficult and by no means relaxing driving! There is a good bar half way up. They told me people get frightened and have to stop there. I could see why.
For a fast run try the Simplon Pass, Switzerland to Italy. Also if in Austria the Grossglockenstrasse is a cracker. It is a national park, costs 26 euros toll but worth every cent. Roads are smooth and fast and the views are unbeatable (if you have time to look).

I've tried this one too, and it's a good one.
South of there, into Italy, are many good driving roads.
The really good ones have forests of white Christian
crosses on each bend, one for each person who didn't make
it round the bend.
This makes for "interesting" times when you approach a corner
a bit too fast, and notice dozens of crosses ...
