I'm on holiday so looking for some projects... Anyone have any simple top tips for putting a 12V socket one in my car?

I noticed the other day I have a CTEK socket run directly off the battery terminals so perhaps I could simply fit one of these?

Thanks

I fitted one last week. I don't know whether your car's the same but I have a fabricated alloy, 'fuse box cover' up under the passenger dash.

I bought a socket and an in line fuse. Fitted the socket in to side panel of the cover, and wired it straight to the battery, with the fuse in line, of course.

Works a treat and is always live for charging the battery.

I fitted mine above the passengers knee in the wiper motors bracket.

What Seven do you have. The more recent cars have an always live 12v output from the fusebox.

Aye it's a '98 so not recent at all. Will go have a look but I think I could easy run to under the passenger side. Not sure about whether to drill the dashboard or not.

Thanks all

My 12v socket is under the dash, on the Ali panel above passenger knees.

I fitted one of these to the far left of the dash (1992 car), as I wanted a waterproof cover but also wanted the socket accessible.

I originally had it wired to the battery, but I've now connected the live to the 'Accessory' output from fuse box (i.e. The first click of the key) and the earth to the dash's common earth. I've also removed the fuse, as the Accessory output is already fused. If you just wire it straight from the back of the ignition switch, you'll want to keep the inline fuse.

Hi Si, how's it going? Wiring it that way wouldn't let you use aux socket to plug in a trickle charger would it? Mine sits under the dash above the tunnel wired directly to the battery via a small fuse box fixed to the outside face of the scuttle.

If you're going to fit a socket, fit a double one, you're bound to find you need a second one some time smile

I fitted one of these on a bracket inside the bulkhead behind the battery.

I fitted a couple of these through the bulkhead above the passengers knees.
The advantage is the wiring is all kept in the engine bay, and I fed one direct from the battery via an inline fuse, and the other via an ignition switched feed.
That way you can connect a battery conditioner to the 'direct' one, and say a feed to a satnav etc to the ignition fed one.
Try a caravan/caravan accessory shop as they're generally stocked, and a bit cheaper.
