Has anyone ridden the Cinder Trail?

It's only 3 and a half weeks before I head off on a multi day trip from Peterborough to Dundee and I'm starting to double check the routes I've planned to take.
One that is a bit of a worry to me because of mixed reviews is the Cinder Trail between Scarborough and Whitby.
Has anyone ridden this route, it looks like it would be a really nice 25 miles to break up our second day but are we going to end up on a surface that makes us hate every minute?
We are riding semi-supported (our other halves are having a road rip to each of our final destinations) on road bikes with 25c tyres (Planet X Pro Carbon & Pinnacle Dolomite 6) which we recently took to Rutland water for a test to see how they handled variable surface which didn't go too badly.
Does anyone think this would be a really bad idea and if so could you let me know a better way of getting between these two places?
I'm also looking at:
Whitby-Middlesbrough-Newcastle
Newcastle-Peebles
Peebles-Edinburgh
Edinburgh-Dundee
Any advice on riding between these places would also be most appreciated.

Personally I wouldn't consider riding the Scarborough -> Whitby cinder trail on anything other than a MTB to be honest. The last time I rode to 10 mile section to Ravenscar was in 2012.
The surface is mixed - some sections are tarmacked (just as you leave Scarborough); some is dirt track (though passable on a hybrid); whereas toward Ravenscar you are in MTB territory. This picture from Tripadvisor is a fair representation of the Ravenscar section:

You staying in Dundee or going further? I'm there for a week from 24th and planning Cairngorm loop probably Sun 26th...Thanks, that muddy lump looks a little worrying, this is why I'm running through the whole route before we set off!
We are finishing at Discovery Point in Dundee, staying with my Nan for one night on my birthday (Aug 1st) and then driving back down.
I love it in the Cairngorms but I think the legs will be done by the time we get there, can't imagine I'll be looking for more hills!
