Morning all,
There's an opinion piece in the latest issue of MBR going on about the number of cables coming off some of the bikes they get in for test in the modern age, and I thought it might be vaguely interesting to see how this comes through into the real world with a quick poll.
To that end, how many cables do you have on the bars of your bike? Multiple options allowed, as I'm sure many of us have more than one bike.
The fewest I've personally seen on a bike is none (get ye back to Shoreditch, you weirdo, brakeless fixie hipster freak!), and the most is seven (does anyone really need a cable to their shock?), so I'll be mightily impressed if anyone manages eight or nine!

Without exception, all of my bikes have the correct number of cables. Which is four.
Two brakes, a front mech, and a rear mech. Any number greater than four is both unnecessary and undesirable. Fewer than four is permissible, if you have dispensed with a front mech to convert your off-road bicycle to a "1 x 10" gearing set up. Fewer than three, though, and I have to ask "are you some kind of pervert?"

I've added a vote for one because I had a bike in Oxford which had a wobbly saddle, no gears (it did freewheel) and only a front brake, operated from the left handlebar. It cost me 50p and needed two innertubes to get it going. It may well still be there now. Was surprisingly quick down St Giles and totally undesirable to thieves.

Try one, and for mountain bikes you'll never ride without one again!
I can only think you'd have 7 Max. Most bikes with locable shocks and dropping seat posts would probably swap to hydraulic disc's also, so I'd say rare to have all cable operated.
