747 "Afterburners"

I think I know the answer to this but thought I would ask.

I was watching Casino Royale again the other day and at the Miami airport scene when they are fighting on the truck a plane which looks like a 747 is coming into to land. It aborts the landing and as it takes off again the engines seem to ignite afterburners. I am guessing that this doesn't actually happen? I assume the whole plane was CGI'd so they just put that in for dramatic effect?

The aircraft in the movie is a Skyfleet S570, which I think might have been equipped with afterburners. 747s do not come with afterburners as standard, I think they were a £630 upgrade on 1980-1982 UK models only.

(Nerd hat on) Actually the Skyfleet S570 was the fictional aircraft they where unveiling/attempting to blow up and is not shown with its engines running (with or without afterburners) :-)


The plane attempting to land is (supposed to be) a 747 and while it exhibits flames/a glow from the rear of the engines its not really the effect you'd expect or they intended from afterburners, I assume its there to simply to suggest to the viewers that its been given full thrust hence it blows the chasing cars away.

(I assume this was shot at Dunsford or similar where they have a big ugly plane with twin engines pods that Clarkson is always using for his TG stunts)

I have seen flames come out the back of a 747's engines. It was during start up of a Virgin Atlantic 747-100 or 200 at Gatwick years ago. As the aircraft was being pushed back from the stand the engines were beginning to wind up and one of the engines made a loud bang and a ball of flame came out the back.

Isn't that usually followed by the compressor blades coming out of the front?

Doesn't sound like a compressor stall or surge, probably just a very late ignition on start-up. A surge can wreck an engine with 'bits' out the front end. Fairly rare now with modern control systems.

I thought that the go-around aircraft in question might not have been Skyfleet S570 but I've never actually seen Casino Royale to know.

I think the big ugly plane is the mock-up that was used as the Skyfleet.
