Driving myself nuts here !! Been going through my range rover today (1991 vogue se Auto) and on the bottom of the bell housing / gear box there is a hole with what appears to be a bolt missing .

I think its the wading plug but before I blow the gear box up can someone confirm please !!!

Thanks

Wading plug hole. Plug should only be fitted before wading & removed afterwards.
Mine's a square headed one: http://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/other/101-forward...

ETA Is that ATF or engine oil leaking & do you know where it's coming from?

Thanks, Just litterally got it back pretty sure its an oil leak, its being serviced next week so should be sorted.

Pretty sure its a dried out gasket, been off the road for a while

Both AFT and Oil level in the middle of the marks.

Having said that its a Landrover ... so I would be concerned if it didn't leak !!! Could only mean there is no oil in it !!

True smile

Oil leaks can be rocker covers, valley gasket, sump gasket. If it was coming out of the drain hole I'd suspect the rear crank seal.
The later rubber rocker covers seals are better than the cork ones & I find that cleaning the sump bolts & applying a little loctite to each one stops the sump leaks - I suspect that they work themselves loose over time, certainly was the case with mine.
ETA don't forget to check the breather passages in the plenum, they can block which will cause the crankcase to pressurise. Mine (3.5EFi) were blocked solid when I bought it & oil leaked out of all sorts of interesting places.

Going off my lightweight the plug is kept screwed onto a piece of bar near that hole.
It might ba a 1/4" bps iron plug. Available from your local plumbers merchant.

Well turns out one of the rocker covers was loose, not sure if this is a 100 % fix, time will tell

Somehow my duffs were also holding pressure and forcing oil out of the half shaft bolts ( that may not be a totally accurate description !!) but somewhere near there !

Of course being a landrover it may have totally fixed it or it may piss oil everywhere tomorrow !!

Assuming duffs = diffs it sounds like a blocked axle breather.

Most likely. They need to be removed & cleaned, as do the plastic extension pipes leading from them.
IME it's the banjo bolts & the banjos themselves that block. Just be a little careful as the bolts can shear without much provocation as they are hollow.
Hot water/hot air gun does the trick for removing/refitting the plastic pipe. Blow through them & a length of electrical wire can be pushed through to clear.
