Hi everyone-

I need to get a new car, and am toying between a new 991GTS or a Turbo S. I know they're dramatically different cars. I also know the 991 is due a facelift come January. That means there are deals to be had if you buy one now from stock. The Turbo is is available with large 10-12% discount off list, while the GTS has less discount, more like 5%.
Of course the Turbo S will depreciate faster. Meanwhile the GTS could become an instant classic when the face lifted 991 goes all turbo from January - ie the GTS may well be the last naturally aspirated 911.

So what do you all think?

The Turbo is insanely fast and capable, but the GTS is likely to be more involving and will sound much better. As you say, it will probably also depreciate less.

Presumably there is still a £20k gap in outlay between the two, once discounts are taken into account? For the same price I'd have the Turbo, but I think I'd choose the GTS and have £20k left over for a nice holiday or two!

I'm sure you won't be disappointed with either.

I looked Into the GTS before buying a new Turbo Cab. My last 4 cars have all been sub 3.8 secs 0-60 & whilst I'm sure the GTS would have been nice, I know I would have been disappointed with the performance.

My OPC lent me a new C4S last year when my previous turbo was in & whilst the drive & the noise was good, I did find the performance a bit disappointing. The GTS is I think .2 secs quicker 0-60 than the C4S. If performance isn't an issue & you want to see the 17k ish difference then go for the GTS, however if you like the kudos of the Turbo or Turbo S badge & the added power, go for the best! I think you'd have to hang on to a GTS for prob 10+ years for it to maybe start to turn on price.....

FYI, whilst the Turbo S was in my budget, having driven both the Turbo & Turbo S at Silverstone, the difference in handling/ performance was marginal. I'm not fussed about ceramics & the Turbo S definitely depreciates more than the Turbo, hence why I went for mine smile

I've had a turbo S cab and just bought my wife a GTS cab, the turbo is a great daily stter with stupid performance but a little sterile, the GTS although slower feels more nimble and special than the turbo.

So I had the privilege of driving a Turbo and a GTS back-to-back for 4 hour over Berkshire country roads yesterday.

There is no denying the Turbo has noticeably more shove than the GTS, especially in the 50-90mph elastic range. It really is a weapon. However there is equally no doubt for me that the GTS was the more rewarding car to drive. It's a terrific overall package, and provides for a highly involving, focused experience. The soundtrack of the GTS is also leagues better than that of the Turbo, where the "ptschhhhhh" of the waste gates was the main noticeable (and quickly irritating) sound whenever I took my foot off the gas. So no doubt about the verdict: GTS any day. It's telling that 3 out of the 3 Porsche salesmen I asked about which car they'd choose for themselves, all opted for the GTS without hesitation.

With all 991s going turbo-charged from January, I think the GTS could become a classic pretty quickly.

As good as a GTS is, don't kid yourself that it will be an instant classic or future classic. It won't.

It will probably hold money better than a equiv Carrera, but it's not really anything that special - look back to the 996 C4S and 997 GTS for depreciation patterns.

Last of the non turbos, last of the this and that, we've heard it and seen it all before. Last of the hydrolic steering, last of the manual gearbox, last of the Mezger, etc - the new cars are still selling like hotcakes. Air cooled to water cooled was a step change, but even so if the 996 didn't look so st it would probably have held money better. The GT3s won't be turbo for the short to med term, so there will be an option for non-turbo.
