Were my eyes deceiving me?

...or did I see a BLACK Merlin helicopter passing low over Bramley Training Area yesterday?
I was just sat there, waiting for what seemed like forever, at the level crossing beside Bramley Station, when I hear a familiar racket off to my left.
Then, from behind some trees, climbing out and away to it's right, away from me, was a Merlin, painted what appeared to be all over black. I thought all the RAF Merlins were the same mid green colour, and anyway, aren't they all going over to the Fleet Air Arm?
I grabbed my camera to get a picture if it came around again, but I never did see it return. There was a Chinook playing too, out to the west, possibly in the Quidhampton/Overton area, later in the afternoon.
